5 steps to cool the planet and feed people

How is the food system related to climate change? Did you know that practically half of the greenhouse gases are produced by the agro-industrial food production system?

Agro-industrial food production is having a negative impact on the Earth mainly in 6 different ways:

* Deforestation of ancient forests and jungles > Industrial agriculture monopolizes fertile lands, for which they are deforesting forests and jungles that are being replaced by monocultures.

Industrial agriculture is responsible for up to 90% of deforestation worldwide.

The impact of deforestation contributes negatively to both the environment and the inhabitants of deforested areas.

* Agroindustrial production > Industrial agriculture requires a lot of machinery to systematize mass food production. This machinery works from fossil fuels. On the other hand, the agro-industrial production of crops requires large amounts of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides that are applied by air and land. Its use releases gases into the atmosphere that contribute to the greenhouse effect . As if that were not enough, the environmental impact of intensive animal husbandry should be added.

* Food transport > nowadays many of the products that can be found in any supermarket can be made on the other side of the world. They are called Kilometric Foods and they have an ecological footprint that we cannot afford. Eating local and organic is the best for your health and that of the environment.

* Industrial processing and packaging > to transform many of the mass-produced foods, the industry emits more greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

* Refrigeration > In order to properly maintain many of these processed products, it is essential to refrigerate them until the consumer buys them.

* Food waste > the industrial food system throws away almost half of the food it produces. So, not only is it contaminated with the production of monocultures, the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, their transport, processing, packaging and refrigeration, but we must also add the greenhouse gases that these food waste produce.

So what can we do to fix it?

The proposal made by Via Campesina and GRAIN is food sovereignty through the empowerment of small organic producers and informed and responsible consumers.

But to understand everything much better and to be able to contribute to a more sustainable consumption, do not miss the video ” Together we can cool the planet “, made by Via Campesina and GRAIN. In it they propose 5 steps to cool the planet and feed people :

* Nourish the soil, care for and regenerate the land. Sustainable soil management is essential.

* Abandon the use of pesticides and promote agroecological and local cultivation

* Eat fresh, locally produced food

* Support the cultivation of land by small peasants and avoid large corporations that incur in land grabbing. Recognize the knowledge, traditions and knowledge of peasants.

* Reject false promises from governments and large corporations that seek to impose a global model of food production and distribution (such as TTIP )
