Adonis vernalis is a valuable plant in the pharmaceutical industry

Adonis vernalis also known as Partridge’s Eye , Vernal Adonis, False Eleboro or Spring Adonis. It belongs to the Ranunculaceae family. It is native to Southern, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as Asia.

Characteristics of the Adonis vernalis

Herbaceous plant of a height of between 20 to 30 cm, which can expand on the sides.

The stems are aerial, erect and branched. The rhizome is small, black in color from which the roots of the same color emerge

The leaves are alternate, basal, light green.

The flowers are solitary, terminal, cylindrical in shape, in a strong yellowish tone, which is formed by several loose petals (10 to 20). It blooms in the spring, in the first weeks.

The fruit is poloaquenian on an elongated receptacle, green in color.

Caring for Adonis vernalis

It is a plant that is used in the pharmaceutical industry for its multiple diuretic, sedative and vasoconstrictor properties. However, being a highly toxic species, it must be used under medical supervision.

In nature it is found in undergrowth pastures and areas not very sunny and with a certain degree of humidity.

As for the light, it requires being in full sun especially in cold climates, although in hot climates it can be in semi-shade.

The soil must be well drained and preferably dry.

Irrigation should be applied only if necessary.

Pruning is only to remove wilted or dried flowers.

The Adonis vernalis  is a plant not very prone to diseases or pests.

It multiplies by division or by root cuttings in the spring. Even for seeds in the fall.
