Caring for Narcissus tazetta or Bouquet Narcissus

Narcissus tazetta also known as Bouquet Narcissus, Common Narcissus, White Junco or White Narcissus . It belongs to the Amaryllidaceae family, which is made up of about 50 species of bulbous plants native to the Mediterranean basin, central Asia and China.

The word narcissus comes from the Greek Narkisus which means the root of the word narcotic.

Characteristics of the Narcissus tazetta

Bulbous plant with bluish-green, tapered leaves that can be ribbed or flat and usually measure between 30 and 35 cm in length. Usually five leaves sprout.

The flowers are white, yellow or both and give off a subtle aroma. It blooms in early spring and is often forced to bloom in winter.

It is an ideal species for borders and massifs combined with other bulbous ones. They are even used in planters and pots for balconies or terraces as a houseplant.

Keep in mind that when grown indoors, they flower only once, as the bulbs are not kept.

It requires a sunny or semi-shade exposure in a temperate-cold climate.

Although it is not picky about the soil, it does very well mixing equal parts sand, peat and leaf mulch. Planting is done in the fall.

Irrigation must be frequent during the growing season, but avoiding waterlogging.

Pruning should only be done to cut off wilted flowers to allow for vigorous growth the following season.

If you want to keep the bulbs, you should keep them until the leaves are dry.

For the compost it is better those that are special, avoiding with mineral fertilizers.

The pests that can attack the plant are the aphid, the bulb mosquito, the daffodil fly, the nematodes and the daffodil galleruca. However, the main enemy is an excess of water that can rot the bulb.

It multiplies by separating suckers from the mother plant during the dormant period, or from seeds. Although the most advisable thing is to buy the bulbs in specialized stores in garden centers.
