Eichhornia crassipes, a floating species considered invasive

Eichhornia crassipes also known as Camalote, Lampazo, Camalotes, Violeta de agua, Taruya, Buchón or Jacinto de agua . It belongs to the Pontederiaceae family, which is made up of 7 species of aquatic perennial plants. It is native to the Amazon basin, in South America.

Characteristics of the Eichhornia crassipes

Floating species with submerged roots . Said roots are black with white extremities when they are young and purplish black when they are adults.

It lacks a stem, but is provided with an emerging rhizome. From a spongy, balloon-inflated surface that is similar to an air-filled bladder that can be held on the surface.

The leaf is evergreen, linear, submerged and emerged, obovate and rounded.

The flowers are reminiscent of orchids, in lilac and bluish spikes with a large yellow dot at the top. It blooms in the summer, however the flowers last only a few days.

Eichhornia crassipes care

It is a species that is used to decorate small lakes, but especially ponds and aquariums. This is because it needs water with little current.

It needs to be in full sun or semi-shade. Likewise, it requires intense lighting, since if it is artificial it must be a complete light ramp.

In winter the plant  must be protected.

It is grown at a temperature between 20 to 30˚C, in containers at a depth of at least 20 cm and a thin layer of peat at the bottom.

It does not require fertilizer, since it obtains the nutrients from the water.

It is a plant resistant to pests and diseases.

It multiplies by dividing the rhizomes or by stolons. The latter in the summer.
