Gentiana alpina whose blue flowers do not go unnoticed

Gentiana alpina also known as Gentian alpina . It belongs to the Getianaceae family. Its origin and distribution is in the Sierra Nevada, the Pyrenees and the Alps.

Characteristics of the alpine Gentiana

Herbaceous plant that can reach a height of 10 cm , in which most of it is the flower. It has no stem, but strong, rhizomatous, axonomorphic roots with stolons to expand.

The leaves appear in rosettes, ovate to elliptical in shape, with an acute or obtuse apex and light green to yellowish-green.

The flowers are large, solitary, with a bell-shaped corolla and long lobes, dark blue in color and white inside with greenish edges.

The fruit is a dehiscent capsule with the ends tapering at the end. The seeds are reticulated, small with streaks and brown in color.

Caring for the alpine Gentiana

It is a species found in mountain meadows or grasslands. Being ideal in rocky or alpine gardens, also for herbaceous slopes or to form small ornamental corners.

It requires being in semi-shade or in moderate sun. But it can’t stand harsh winters and extreme cold.

As for the soil, you need one that is cool, acidic and moist. Now that if it becomes too invasive, it would be necessary to thin it from time to time during flowering to give it a neater and more attractive appearance.

For planting, it is convenient to make regular intervals of 20 to 40 cm between each one so as not to impair development and achieve an optimal result for flowering.

Irrigation must be regular. Although it should be more abundant in the summer to be able to keep it cool.

It is a species that can be susceptible to attack by pests, especially snails. So it would be necessary to carry out preventive treatments with neem oil  or nettle infusions in order to minimize the risk of the plant being affected.

When it comes to disease, it can be vulnerable to fungus when it is poorly drained and very wet.

It multiplies by means of seeds.
