Helichrysum bracteatum, a beautiful plant whose flowers manage to frame any place

Helichrysum bracteatum  also known as Paper Flower, Immortal Straw, Immortal, Perpetual or Straw Flower . It belongs to the family of Composites of the genus Helichrysum, made up of about 500 species. It is native to Australia.

The name Helichrysum from the Greek Helios which means “sun” and from Khrysos which is “gold”.

Helichrysum bracteatum characteristics

Herbaceous or shrubby perennial or annual plant  that can reach 30 to 80 cm in height.

The leaves are lanceolate, linear, oblong or filiform, whole, light green to dark green.

The flowers appear in the form of chapters that can be isolated or in bouquets, white, pink, purple, cream and yellow. It has a long flowering period. It blooms in the summer.

Helichrysum bracteatum care

It is a species that is used to form mixed borders, or in pots  for terraces and balconies. In addition, it is used as a cut flower.

It requires full sun exposure. It is hardy outdoors in the summer, but requires a greenhouse for frost.

As for the soil, it should be light, with ¼ sand and ¼ peat, and good drainage. Being of Mediterranean origin, it prefers calcareous soils.

Irrigation should be at least twice a week, preferably with a small amount.

The fertilizer should be every 15 days with mineral fertilizer in mid-spring and mid-summer.

Pruning is only to remove wilted flowers and thereby facilitate their flowering.

It is a species resistant to pests. Rather, what could cause damage is excess moisture.

It can be multiplied by means of seeds sown in the early spring, or by division of the bush in the spring or autumn.

Germination takes place for 10 to 20 days at a temperature of 18 ° C. Once it has a considerable size, it can be planted in a pot.
