  • Plaster;
  • Grass seed spreader;
  • Measuring tape;
  • Empty cans.

How to grow a new lawn in autumn

Growing a new lawn in the fall is a task that requires some theoretical and practical knowledge and it is essential that you have the maximum concentration to do everything well. There are many jobs that must be carried out in order to grow the new lawn effectively and to do it correctly you must comply with the following 6 steps:

1. Aerate the lawn

The straw that is created by the accumulation of dead grass on the surface can prevent water from entering the soil and, consequently, reaching the grass roots. Make your lawn as healthy and attractive as possible by using a soil aerator so that the water from your sprinkler or irrigation system penetrates the straw and soil on your lawn. If you want, you can rent a soil aerator at a specialty store and, in less than an hour, the soil on your lawn will be properly ventilated.

2. Loosen clay soils when adding plaster

When preparing the soil for a lawn , the loamy soil must be very loose, as this will give the necessary porosity for nutrients to be absorbed and for new grass seeds to develop. If you notice that the soil is not sufficiently permeable, it is necessary to add plaster to make it as fertile as possible. Spreading the plaster will better prepare the lawns for sowing and this is a task that should be done in the fall.

3. Spread phosphorus-rich fertilizer

Add a fertilizer that is rich in phosphorus to the soil of your lawn during the autumn season, particularly in October or November. In doing so the roots of the new grass seeds will get deeper and will absorb water for a longer period of time, which prevents the roots from drying out throughout the day.

However, it should be noted that before placing the phosphorus in the soil of your lawn, you must perform a specific test to check the levels of phosphorus there.
There are specific equipment for this purpose and you can purchase them at a drugstore or specialized garden store.

4. Choose the best time of day to sow again

The best time to place the new grass seeds on the ground is when the temperature of the day is not too hot. So, if you want to sow grass seeds again or if you want to apply lime, phosphorus or fertilizer , you should choose the moments of less heat so that the soil is not too tired. Many people choose to perform this task early in the day, as it is when the weather is cooler. To help you accomplish this task, you can use a seed spreader of your choice: manual, rotary or drip.

5. Cover the grass seeds

After placing the grass seeds in the soil, you should use a layer of straw to cover the entire area that has been planted. This will make the seeds moist, which, in a way, will provide an incentive for their rapid growth. Use only a light straw cover to allow water to enter the soil and reach the new grass seeds.

6. Use an appropriate watering

You should follow the irrigation methods recommended for growing new grass seeds. Some of these methods include irrigation in the coldest periods of the day or at night and watering the new seeds twice a day for the first few weeks. In doing so you are encouraging the growth of stronger and deeper roots.

Please note that over-watering can result in new roots rotting. In this sense, give your lawn only 3 centiliters of water per day so that it does not receive too many liquids. To determine the amount of water your lawn is receiving, you can place an empty bowl in the irrigation area and after watering, check the amount of water left in that bowl before it evaporates. It is an excellent method to see if a lawn is receiving the amount of water necessary for its growth.
