The main components of organic fertilizer

The compost container

The compost container must be of considerable size in order to create enough organic fertilizer for an entire garden. As such, you should choose or build a container with enough depth, preferably with a lid and small openings for the air intake. It is very important that this container has a robust construction to withstand the chemical reactions that occur inside it.

The green layer

The green layer is the nitrogen source of organic fertilizer and, as such, has the mission of trapping heat, which will cause the development of nutrients from other components. To form a good green layer, it is necessary to collect the following materials: chicken droppings, coffee grounds, tea leaves, fruit and vegetable remains, plants and grass clippings ; you must not add meat or fish scraps. After purchasing them, you should put them in a pile. You can do this over time, reusing the biological remains of your household waste.

The brown layer

The brown layer is the fiber source of the organic fertilizer. Fibers are the main reactants when the green layer produces heat. The materials used in the brown layer are: egg shells, dead plants, weeds, withered flowers, sawdust, cardboard, hay, straw and other similar items.

The composting process

After gathering the materials necessary to make the green and brown layer, it is necessary to mix them in a compost container. To do this correctly, you must put three parts of the brown layer and only one of the green layer in order to obtain the best organic fertilizer. Add water to the components of the green and brown layer, then add soil. Repeat the process until all materials are in the compost container, mix them daily and add water regularly. When you do it this way, the mixture will decompose and you will be able to form organic fertilizer to get your hands on the ground .

The methods used in the formation of organic fertilizer

The process of making organic fertilizer can involve two different methods: cold and hot compost.

Composting cold organic fertilizer

The cold organic fertilizer composting method is divided into four fundamental parts:

  • The easiest way to make compost and use it as an organic fertilizer or mulch is to make a compost pile in your garden or in a compost container;
  • In that same compost pile, you should place grass clippings, all kinds of leaves and weeds;
  • You must wait for a period of 6 to 24 months for the compost to start decomposing by itself;
  • If you occasionally turn the compost heap over, it will speed up the decomposition process, as earthworms, insects and microorganisms will spread and organic materials will be more easily dissolved. You should keep in mind that wood is a material that offers a slower decomposition, so if you want to speed up the whole process, it is advisable to leave it out.

Composting hot organic fertilizer

The method of composting hot organic fertilizer can be carried out in two different ways. Are they:

Without fertilizer: to maintain heat, the compost pile must have a “critical compost mass”. Start by mixing one part of green organic matter with three parts of brown organic matter. Place vegetables, fruits and food scraps in the center. Continue to add “ingredients” to your organic matter mixture for a few weeks until it is about 1.5 meters wide at the bottom and 1 meter wide at the top. The internal temperature of the compost pile must reach around 49 to 66 degrees centigrade. It is advisable to turn the compost heap at least once a week, as by doing so you will be able to produce organic fertilizer within 6 to 8 weeks.

With compost: this is a composting method that is known to use several different layers. In a square place, start by placing the straw on the floor or at the base of a compost container. Then, as a second layer, use leftover food, fertilizer or plants. The third layer is composed of all types of leaves, which decompose faster than the others. Then just repeat the layers and finish with a layer of straw. It is recommended that you stir the compost pile regularly so that the decomposition process is as fast as possible. In summer, you may need water to keep the compost pile moist.

The application of organic fertilizer in the soil

During decomposition, apply a layer of organic fertilizer to your garden. You should spread the preparation evenly and in a short time you will get the best results.
