How to plant a flower garden

Who loves gardening, loves a beautiful flower garden – especially if it’s yours! Whether you are a beginner or simply want to resume gardening after an absence of this outdoor activity, find out what the main steps to take to plant an irresistible flower garden

Location and light

Before planting a flower garden it is necessary to analyze its location: for beginners, it is suggested a flat place with a lot of sun exposure (at least half a day of sunshine). In terms of soil, it is important to check the pH of the soil (while some flowers require acidic soil, others prefer alkaline soil, but there are flowers that survive well in both types of soil); what kind of nutrients it has and what is its moisture level – knowing the characteristics of the land you will be working with will facilitate the choice of flowers that are appropriate for the terrain in question. If it is your first gardening experience, start by planting a small area (about 1m20cm by 3 meters) that is easy to maintain initially and can be increased if you wish.

Flowers of all colors

Choosing flowers and plants for a garden obeys several criteria, starting with the two types of existing flowers – annual (those whose life expectancy is exhausted in one year) and periannual (those that survive winter and are born again in spring). In addition, planting flowers also depends on the style of garden you want to achieve, which dominant colors you want to have, what budget is available, whether you want to bet exclusively on flowers that require little maintenance or don’t mind taking chances with flowers that require more care,… An analysis of all these questions will help you decide which flowers are best for your garden and allow its success in the months and years to come.

Practical utensils

Working the land and keeping the flowers spotless in a garden, requires having the right tools for the activity in question. When it comes to gardening, the tools necessary for any good gardener pass through shovels and scissors, without forgetting the hoe, fork and watering can. In order to guarantee the success of your flower garden, make sure you have all the necessary gardening tools .

Soil preparation

The success of a flower garden also depends on its prior preparation, that is, to avoid weeds and other intruders in your future garden, the soil must be carefully cleaned of all types of herbs, roots and waste. The soil must be well stirred so that a good fertilizer can then be incorporated into the soil. After the fertilizer is well incorporated into the soil, it must be completely smoothed and watered. To facilitate the planting of flowers, you can use the smooth soil to “draw”, using a stick, the layoutof your garden, that is, the way you want to arrange the different flowers. Know, for example, that the tallest plants should be placed at the back of the garden, the medium ones in the middle and the smallest or creeping ones, at the front of the garden. Delimiting the garden with stones or other objects not only makes the garden more appealing and beautiful, it also prevents the soil in your garden from draining whenever it rains. In addition, creating a border for the garden also prevents it from being “attacked” by weeds that may come from other areas of the land.

Plant the flowers

Having chosen the flowers and preparing the ground, if you chose to plant the flowers using seeds, you must follow the planting instructions on their packaging. If you have chosen potted plants/ cuttings, you should start by making a hole in the soil that is twice as large as the pot in which the flower is located and about 6 or 7 centimeters deeper than the pot. At the bottom of the hole put a layer of about 6 or 7 centimeters of compost or fertilizer, which will help to feed the flowers in the first weeks. Fill the hole with water and wait for the soil to absorb it, then place the flower inside it. Refill the hole with water and start covering it with earth until you reach the top of the hole. Repeat for all the flowers you plant and, in the end, water the entire garden and admire your work!

Maintenance and dedication

Daily cleaning and watering, along with attention to possible diseases , are the main concerns of those who want to keep their flower garden vibrant, colorful and fragrant. In addition, another good tip to ensure a flower garden in the long term is to observe it, that is, to take notes regarding the hours of sunshine or lack of them, if there were problems with pests or diseases, if the flowers should or should not be removed to another location. If you want to expand your garden and include new types of flowers, you can also study which flowers best match those you already have, both visually and in terms of growth.
