How to plant and care for trees

Trees play an extraordinary role in the construction of a garden , since they are the main responsible for the formation of shady places and for the improvement of air quality. Furthermore, they are an exceptional decorative element, as they combine with various types of plants . Learn how to plant and care for trees and improve the quality and beauty of your outdoor space.

Planting trees

To purchase trees and plant them in your garden, you must first go to a greenhouse or specialized garden store and find out about the best species you can buy there. Bear in mind that the success of a plantation is related to the way the land is worked and prepared. In this sense, for the cultivation of trees to be done in an exemplary way, it is necessary to comply with the following aspects:

Regularly water the trees

All trees – even the most drought-tolerant species – need to be watered frequently during the first few years after planting. This is a fundamental step that will cause the roots of the trees to develop and reach the depth necessary to conserve a particular tree or shrub in the most severe drought periods. After having their root system established, most trees only need frequent irrigation .

Fertilize planting land correctly

Regular fertilization of farmland is very important in planting trees, especially in the first years of life. In doing so, the land becomes richer and nourished and this is essential for the growth of all trees, plants and flowers . As soon as a tree is well fixed to the ground, that is, with very deep roots, it will be able to grow autonomously, without any type of feeding reinforcement. It should be noted that additional feeding should only occur in cases where the trees are weak, weak or malnourished.

How to form a strong tree trunk

Young trees develop a strong trunk more quickly if their lower branches are in the correct position after planting. In the first years, the side branches should be cut only if they are too thick or long, otherwise you should not do it. On the other hand, you should be aware that the pruning of the tree branches should be done only during the dormancy period of the plants or just before the spring plantings. As soon as a trunk becomes 5 centimeters thick, it should start by gradually removing the lower branches over a period of several years.

Staking a tree

A young tree will be able to develop a stronger trunk if it grows without any support or stakes. However, if a tree is planted in a windy location or if the main trunk is too weak to stand alone, that same trunk should be reinforced with stakes or supports to help the tree grow. To use the piles correctly, you must follow the following steps:

  1. Use a loop that will not harm or damage the outside of the respective tree. It is advisable to use canvas or rubber materials in order not to hinder the growth of the tree;
  2. Attach the loop around the tree and place stakes or supports on each side of the trunk;
  3. Make sure the tree is not too tight. It should be loose enough to be able to be stirred about 2.5 centimeters on each side.

To find out where to fix the ties of the stakes, in case the tree trunk is weak, you should run your hand over the respective trunk until you find a spot without fail. You should cut the stakes just above the loops so that the tree does not go into stress and so that it can develop properly. It should also be noted that in a windy place, the roots of a young tree may also need anchors to stay firmly in contact with the earth and, as such, you must place specific supports above the ground to hold them effectively. At the end of a year, all stakes and supports must be removed, so that the tree is autonomous and self-sustaining.

The protection of the trunk of a young tree

For a young tree to survive any kind of situation, it is necessary that it is under constant observation so that it can grow in a healthy and consistent way. It should involve the trunk of the newly planted tree in order to protect it from dry winds, the hot sun, the destruction of wild animals, such as deer, or even rodents, and the damage caused by lawn mowers .

To wrap the tree trunk in a convenient way, you should use a burlap sack or a prefabricated trunk with packaging material. Keep in mind that these materials must be removed one year after they are placed, when the skin becomes thicker and more resistant.
