Planting celery or celery in your own vegetable garden can be a great way to have one of your most valuable, aromatic, low-calorie vegetables grown at your table. Celery is one of the best known foods in Mediterranean cuisines and this is due to the uniqueness of its main flavors. Learn how to plant celery in the garden.

Types of celery

The celery belongs to the herbaceous species that has a very branched root system, with strong and fibrous roots. To plant celery in your vegetable garden , you need to know the different types on the market. There are approximately 30 distinct celery varieties and all of them with the same nutritional principles. In this sense, the production of celery is divided into two large groups:

Cultivated celery or hortense: it is a vegetable that is not very long, it has light stems and dark green leaves. It is distinguished from the others for its conservation capacity, as it can withstand many days in excellent conditions of use. In order for the cultivated celery or hortense to always look good, after harvesting, it is necessary to place it in the refrigerator and wrap it in a damp cloth.

Celery with leaves and stems: this type of celery encompasses many varieties, such as golden, white, green celery, head celery, turnip, horseradish or red. These are celery that are medium in size and have leaves. These, in turn, must be consumed within a maximum of two weeks, otherwise they lose all their flavor.

The best climate for growing celery

Originally from Europe, celery is a vegetable widely grown in temperate countries. It is a plant that does not need much light and withstands temperatures between 5 and 30 degrees centigrade, with the ideal temperature for its cultivation being 10 to 25 degrees. Strong frosts can bring down and damage a plantation and, as such, it must be well protected. Celery is a plant with an annual cultural cycle that can be grown during the winter and spring seasons and its harvest starts 150 to 180 days after planting. It should be noted that the ripening of celery in the colder months makes its flavor more sweet and aromatic.

Soil preparation

Celery, as well as tomatoes , asparagus and other vegetables, need a soil rich in nutrients and, as such, your soil needs to have a good drainage, a pH between 5.8 and 6, 7 and constant humidity. These are the three main requirements that assist in the cultivation of celery and the perfect development of its stem. Prepare a pit: open a ditch with a depth and width of approximately 45 centimeters. Half fill it with fertilizer, preferably organic , so that the soil is as fertile as possible.

Let the soil rest: the soil needs to rest for a maximum period of two weeks and only after this time should the celery be planted.

Plant celery seeds: When planting celery seeds you should cover them with plant roots with soil and manure or straw. This step is essential to maintain constant humidity and growth, especially on the hottest days.

Celery planting

Celery, like broccoli, can be purchased in packs or individually and to find out if it is in good condition, you should first check its color. When celery is fresh, its leaves are wide open and have a strong, bright green color. Therefore, in order for your celery to always be fresh, you must let it grow for a maximum period of 5 months and comply with the following steps:

Use celery seeds 2-3 years old: the results will be more satisfactory when older seeds are used. On the other hand, its use avoids the appearance of pests and diseases for plants.

Plant celery seeds in a tray: small seeds are best planted on the surface of a tray or in a pot, as this will make your crop easier to pick. Afterwards, you just have to add a little sand or soil from your garden.

Keep the seeds moist: the seeds should be moist for an average of three weeks so that they can burst naturally and bloom to the full.

Organic celery cultivation and growth

Since commercial celery has one of the largest spray residues, it is advisable that the cultivation of celery and its growth be organic. For this to be possible, it is necessary to comply with the following aspects:

Transplant the celery seeds: the celery seeds must be moved to a place in your garden with a high finger and must be separated at a distance of 30 centimeters. This distance allows the celery to have enough space to grow and helps to control the appearance of weeds.

Water the soil constantly: you must ensure that the watering of the soil is constant and you must keep the cover for plant roots made with soil and manure or straw intact. Celery seeds should preferably be watered in the morning and directly on the soil instead of being watered on the leaves, as this reduces the possibility of fungi appearing in the soil.

Fertilize the plants: every two to four weeks give the plants a liquid food of algae and even a little fish fertilizer or more compost. This action allows plants to be given more acidity and smoothness and is one of the most important steps to be taken before harvest.

Tying the stem: For the celery to grow properly, it is necessary to tie its stem. As soon as the stem is visible, it should be tied to a third of its height. Later, it should be tied up to two thirds and a week before harvesting it should be tied to the base of the leaves.

The importance of celery in food

Celery is extremely important in food and this is thanks to its high fiber content and because it is a low calorie vegetable. It is a good source of potassium, iron, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin A, B and C, which helps to reduce inflammation, blood pressure, cholesterol and protects against cancer. It is also rich in cellulose, an important substance for the proper functioning of the intestines.
