Leek, also called leek or leek, is a plant whose pseudostem is formed by layers of sheaths of its leaves. It is mainly the pseudostem that is used as food, although the leaves and flowers can be used as well. Leeks can be eaten raw, cooked or braised.

A biannual plant that is usually grown as an annual, the leeks or leeks can reach 60 to 100 cm in height.

Climate

Leeks or leeks grow best in mild weather, with temperatures between 13 ° C and 24 ° C, but can be grown in warmer weather if the soil is kept well moist, although a period of relatively high temperatures is usually required. low for its proper development. This plant resists low temperatures.

Brightness

Cultivate preferably in direct sunlight for at least a few hours daily. It can also be grown in partial shade with good light.

Ground

Cultivate in well-drained, light, fertile soil, rich in organic matter and rich in nitrogen. The ideal soil pH is in the range of 6.0 to 6.8.

Irrigation

Irrigate frequently so that the soil is kept moist, but without being soaked.

Planting

The planting of leeks is done by seeds, which are sown approximately 1 cm deep, in the final place or in sowing. In the latter case, the transplant is done when the seedlings are 10 to 20 cm high, which occurs approximately two months after sowing. The seedlings should have the pseudostem almost completely buried in the soil, leaving only the tip with visible foliage.

The recommended spacing is 30 to 50 cm between the lines and 15 to 20 cm between the plants.

Leeks or leeks can also be grown in pots that are at least 25 cm deep (greater depth is better).

Cultivation

Remove invasive plants that are competing with leeks for nutrients and resources.

If it is the goal, periodically pile up soil next to the plants as they grow, leaving only the tip of the pseudostem with leaves visible, to obtain long white pseudostem.

Harvest

The harvesting of leeks or leeks is usually done between 120 and 150 days after planting, depending on the cultivar and cultivation conditions. Plants are usually harvested when their pseudostems are 2.5 to 4 cm in diameter. The plant is plucked whole, and its leaves can be trimmed. The leaves are edible, but are less appreciated and used than the pseudostem.

The harvest can be delayed without problems if the climate remains suitable for cultivation.
