Information on growing turmeric

Turmeric is a perennial herbaceous plant from Southeast Asia and India, belonging to the Zingiberaceae family. It has aerial stems that can reach up to 60 cm high. The underground stem is a rounded tuber from which other elongated tubers develop around it; it has an intense and characteristic aroma. It has broad, light green leaves and simple yellow or purple flowers depending on the varieties.

Turmeric cultivation

Turmeric thrives very well in loose , fertile and humid soils, as long as they don’t lack moisture. Compact soils or those in which water is flooded, harm them. Grow turmeric in pots with a substrate made up of three parts of river hangover, five parts of black soil and two parts of sand.

The rhizome should be planted in spring 8 cm deep. It requires moderate watering every five days from the moment the shoots begin to appear on the soil surface. Turmeric blooms in mid-summer and, after this time, irrigation should be suspended until the foliage dries completely.

The rhizome is lifted from the ground and conditioned in a ventilated and dry place until the moment of planting in spring. Cook the turmeric for 15 minutes in water and dry in the sun. Turmeric is used as a colorant, a condiment in cooking, and a folk remedy.

How to use turmeric

This perennial plant in the family of ginger, is called “E100” in the current food industry and serves as a coloring for butters , cheese, smoothies and mustards, always in small proportions. It is one of the components of curry, which gives color to this seasoning.

If you are going to prepare something tasty in a pot, keep in mind that the proper amount of turmeric is only a dessert spoonful. This species combines very well with others such as cumin or pepper. Use it to make pasta, rice, sauces, soups, salads, legumes, vegetables, etc. You can also use it with fish or chicken. We could say that it is the best substitute for saffron because it is much less expensive and although it has a different flavor, a tablespoon of it can create a delicious dish.
