Jasminum sambac, a plant that will make any garden shine

Jasminum sambac  also known as Arabian Jasmine, Diamela Jasmine, Diamela, Chamela, Paper Jasmine, Sambac Jasmine, Diamelo Jasmine or Smelly Jasmine . It belongs to the Oleaceae family, being native to India and Arabia.

This species  is considered the national flower of the Philippines, although in this region it is known as sampaguita. It is considered one of the 3 national flowers of Indonesia.

Characteristics of the Jasminum sambac

Perennial plant  can reach a height of 3 m. Of broad, semi-persistent foliage, dark green in color.

The stems are slender from which ovate leaves sprout.

The flowers are large, white, fragrant, which are grouped in panicles that open in the spring.

The fruit is a purple to black berry measuring 1 cm in diameter.

Jasminum sambac care

It is grown outdoors in places where there is no frost.

It needs to be in semi-shade.

As for the soil, it must be acidic, humid and well drained. Now that if it is in a pot, it must be a universal substrate with 10% perlite.

Watering should be 3 to 4 times a week in the summer and less the rest of the year.

The compost will be in early spring until late summer.

For this, it is advisable to fertilize once a month with organic fertilizers such as mulch, manure from herbivorous animals, guano, compost, etc.

The pests that could damage it are the caterpillar of the Margonia species, the pyral jasmine, the defoliator caterpillar, the mealybug, the weevil, the borer and the borer.

Among the diseases that could affect it are Mildu, tuberculosis, leaf spots and flower socarrina.

It is multiplied by means of semi-hard wood cuttings with leaves that are taken at the end of the summer and then put to root in the winter.

It even spreads through suckers or layers.

Applications

It is a plant that helps to minimize cholesterol, prevent the risk of cancer and colds, and is excellent for fighting bacteria.

It also helps reduce weight, regulate circulation, prevent brain damage, high blood pressure, thrombosis, and regulate insulin production.
