Learn about the care and characteristics of Gloxinia

Gloxinia is a plant that belongs to the Gesneriaceae family and the Sinningia genus. Composed of 60 species of tuberous, herbaceous and perennial plants. It is native to the tropical areas of America, especially in Brazil. The name of Gloxinia is given in honor of Benjamin Peter Gloxin, a French botanical writer who lived in the late 18th century.

Gloxinia characteristics

It is a small plant with tuberous root that usually reach 40 cm high. The leaves are oval, fleshy and presented in a rosette. The flowers are bell – shaped, about 10 cm, with velvety petals of different colors , from white crimson red, dark red, purple and even combinations. In addition, many have a large number of spots or are veined.

Gloxinia care

It is a species that must be located in a well-lit place, but that does not receive the sun’s rays directly. It is perfect for interiors.

Being a tropical plant, it does not resist cold, so it is ideal that it is at least 20 unosC throughout the year.

As for the soil should have a mixture of equal parts of soil, leaves and sand. It is even advisable to make a plantation when finished the winter so that is protected from the cold.

Watering should be regular during flowering, but be very careful not to wet the leaves or flowers. After flowering, minimize watering until they are eliminated when the leaves have turned yellow.

The fertilizer should be applied every 15 days during flowering. So the ideal is to add a mineral fertilizer.

Multiplication can be performed by dividing the tubers, from seeds, or by leaf cuttings. Finally for this it is recommended that only experts do because it is a complicated task.

Pests and diseases do may be present if irrigation is abundant, as it can be susceptible to attack by aphids and various fungi.
