Let’s know the care of the Salpiglossis sinuata or Bitter stick

Salpiglossis sinuata also known as Bitter stick or Donkey belly. It belongs to the Solanaceae family, made up of large known species. Being originally from the south of Chile.

The name comes from the Greek Salpnix which means “tube” and gloss which is “tongue”.

Characteristics of the Salpiglossis sinuata

It is a perennial  plant that reaches a height of 1 m, with thin and somewhat ungainly stems.

The leaves without ovate-elliptical, pinnatilobed to pinnathifid and attenuated on the petiole.

The flowers are trumpet-shaped and velvety, with a long tube that opens into 5 bilobed divisions, with the corolla about 4 cm long, tubular, dilated above and open.

It stands out for its brightly colored flowers (white, purple, mauve, pink, purple, orange, yellow and red, among others, with traces that emerge from the throat.) It blooms from October to January.

The fruit is a capsule that has small, black seeds.

Caring for Salpiglossis sinuata

Species that are often used as an ornamental plant for gardens in areas that enjoy mild and dry summers. Even as a cut flower.

It requires sunny exposures and protected from strong winds.

The soil should be sandy and prepared with decomposed guano. But it does not accept poor or too wet soils.

It is better not to transplant them, as the roots can be easily damaged.

It is necessary to keep the soil moist, avoiding excess irrigation, as well as puddles in the substrate. Therefore, irrigation should be moderate.

The diseases that can affect it are verbena, zinnia, balsamina. The annual delphinium and the cosmos.

It is propagated by means of seeds, which are sown in late winter or early spring. Once they have been sown, the ideal is to keep them with some heat and protection, after 3 weeks they will germinate.


This species should not be planted in the same place, but after 6 years.

This plant is usually related to the Petunia, since the two belong to the same family and have a similarity in their flowering.

The foliage is somewhat sticky.

There is no doubt that this beautiful specimen can give that unique touch to green space, thanks to the color of its flowers. So if you have plans to enlarge that garden, this can be a great option.
