Maranta leuconeura, indoor plant whose behavior of its leaves make it unique

Maranta leuconeura  also known as Maranta tricolor and Prayer plant . It belongs to the Maranaceae family. It is native to the tropical areas of South America.

Characteristics of the Maranta leuconeura

A perennial plant with a creeping habit that can reach a height of 20 to 40 cm.

The leaves are oval, velvety on the obverse and with a very marked midrib of a brown or dark green color that stands out on the emerald green background. The underside of the leaf is pale green.

The flowers are presented in clusters, of a very small size, white with purple traces, which last a short time. This species flowers quickly and even if it is grown indoors.

It is a species that is used as a solitary or to form a set with other plants with or without flowers.

It requires abundant but diffuse sun, that is, it should not be placed directly in the sun, since the foliage deteriorates and does not recover.

The humidity must be high for it to thrive.

As for the soil, it should not be saturated. And you can start your dormant period with healthy tubers so they retain their vegetative capabilities.

Irrigation should be frequent in the summer and sparse in the winter. A warm water spray without lime is very beneficial in the hot season.

The fertilizer should be with a fertilizer for leafy plants  and this can be applied during its vegetative period. For this, it must be incorporated with the irrigation water and supplied every three weeks using small quantities.

It multiplies in mid-spring by dividing the tuberous roots, or by cuttings that usually do not have problems.

This plant has the peculiarity that its leaves close at night, this is known as phototropism, which means that it is a response mode of some plants when there is a stimulus in the variation in the amount of light.

This behavior unfolding its leaves has served to be known by the name of the prayer plant.

The stems can root if they come in contact with wet soil.
