Plants that prefer alkaline soils

Many plants prefer acid soils, but others thrive perfectly in alkaline soils, which are those with a pH greater than 7. A pH 7 is considered neutral and is ideal for all plants, but when it is above 7 it is said that it is sweet or alkaline, so it is not suitable for calcareous plants, but it is suitable for wallflower, for example. 1. Pulsatilla anemone

The pulsatilla anemone is a herbaceous plant that requires alkaline soil and lots of sun. It blooms in the shape of a bell in spring and grows in various places. Its flowers are purple and according to a legend it appeared in sites that had been covered with the blood of the Danes, as they often appear in ancient burial mounds. This plant is very easy to care for and has earned the Royal Horticultural Society’s Garden Award of Merit.

2. Campanulas

There are 1,566 tall and short species, which grow well in both full sun and partial shade. They adapt well to a pH greater than 7 and give flowers that range from blue to purple, through pink and white, in the shape of a bell. Many gardeners choose them for the beauty of their flowers.

3. Clematis

They grow very well in limestone soils. There are 200 species and more than 400 cultivars, all of them belonging to the Ranunculaceae family, made up of climbing plants with extremely attractive flowers . Some species are perennial herbaceous plants and others are shrubs. They are well distributed in both hemispheres, as well as in tropical and mountainous areas. Clematis require moderate watering and partial or total sun.

4. Dianthus

Dianthus, also known as carnations or carnations, are perfect for filling in empty spaces in sunny places. They are native to Europe and Asia and bear hot pink to pale pink flowers in spring-summer. Its name comes from two Greek words “deos” (god) and “anthos” (flower). They are annual and very easy to grow.

5. Syringa

The syringa, also called lilac, is very beautiful, especially in spring. It is perfect to place in a small garden. It tolerates the cold very well and needs to be watered two or three times a week.
