Plants that tolerate intense frosts

Syrian Rose

The Hibiscus syriacus is a deciduous shrub foliage and abundant branching 4 meters high from India and China, which is part of the family Malvaceae . Its leaves are ovoidal, toothed or trilobed; 4- 8 centimeters long. Its flowers are solitary, white, bluish, red, purple, etc., single or double; 5-8 cm in diameter. It blooms in summer-autumn.

It prefers a fertile, deep and somewhat clayey soil, and a position in full sun or part shade. It is one of the plants that tolerate frost .

Water every 3-4 days in summer and every 20 days in winter. Fertilize with 200 grams of bone meal in the spring. It propagates by cutting in autumn; sow in spring and prune in fall.

Berberis

The Berberis is a bush of branched deciduous foliage, provided with thorns, 1-1.50 meters high from Europe, which is part of the Berberidaceae family . Its leaves are purple on the upper side and grayish on the lower side; 2-5 cm long. Its flowers are small, yellow, arranged in clusters. It blooms in summer.

It prefers a fertile, deep and somewhat clayey soil; substrate with river surf and black earth, and a position in full sun. Tolerates intense frosts.

Water scarce; per week in the summer and without watering in the winter. Fertilize with 20 grams of compound fertilizer in the spring. Propagate by cutting in summer and fall, and prune in fall.

Nandina

The Nandina is a bush foliage persistent or semi – persistent up to 1 meter in height; It grows forming bushes of China and Japan, which is part of the Berberidaceae family . Its leaves are compound, leaflets of 5 – 6 centimeters. Its flowers are white, 5 mm in diameter, grouped. The red, globose fruits that form in autumn remain on the plant until spring. It blooms in spring.

It prefers a loose and fertile soil, deep and somewhat clayey. In pots, a minimum depth of 30 cm. Provide a full luminosity; more than 4 hours of direct sunlight daily. Nandina is one of the plants that tolerate frost .

Water every 10 days in winter; every 3 – 4 days in summer. Fertilize with 20-30 grams of bone meal in spring. It propagates by seeds in spring.
