Pumpkin cultivation

The pumpkin belongs to the cucurbitaceae family . There are different varieties, one of them being the angel hair pumpkin that is used in making sweets.

The sowing of the pumpkin is recommended to do it from March / April to harvest it in September. Sowing can be done by direct sowing or in seedbeds. More than anything it will depend on the weather you are doing. If there are still low temperatures we will opt for the seedbeds, transplanting the seedling when it measures about 15 cm.

Regarding the soil requirements , the pumpkin is undemanding, adapting easily. Some of the crops compatible with calabza are cabbage, lettuce, corn, chard, beans or tomato, with these combinations nutrients are provided to the soil that benefit all plants, so we will take them into account to take advantage of them as much as possible.

The irrigation requirements are for short periods of time but frequent, having a certain constant humidity, be careful not to flood the ground, it could cause rot in the roots.

As for the light , they need many hours of light, so reserve them a place where they can get it. The pumpkin is happy having a temperature between 20º and 30º C

To help in the development of the fruit, when we see that the pumpkin is already growing, it is advisable to cut the upper part of the branch so that the fruit takes advantage of the nutrients, or if there are two squash on the same branch, we can even make a layer . The layering consists of making a small cut or incision in the branch in which the pumpkin is, which is covered with mulch or humid substrate and is buried, this generates that it takes root and can obtain more nutrients from the soil and collaborate in the development of the pumpkin.
