Ranunculus ficaria, herb that can create a yellow carpet

Ranunculus ficaria also known as Ficaria, Lesser, Herb of the piles, Herb centella minor, Escrofularia minor or Celandine minor . It belongs to the Ranunculaceae family, being native to Europe and West Asia

The name of the genus is derived from the Latin word frog, for living in the same habitat. While the epithelium comes from “Ficus” fig, since its tubers resemble said fruit.

Ranunculus ficaria characteristics

Perennial herb with underground organ and tuberous roots. The stems are branched, 40 cm long, erect or somewhat prostrate.

The leaves are abundant, petiolate, triangular or ovate, reniform or cordate, with toothed edges, shiny in appearance and intense green color.

The flowers are solitary, starting from knots on the stems, bright, yellow in color, with three sepals and obovate or oblong petals, with numerous stamens. Flowers from January to June.

The fruit is achene type, pubescent in appearance.

Ranunculus ficaria care

It is species  that is found in grasslands, riverbanks, fresh forests or wherever you want to form a yellow carpet.

It needs to be in semi-darkness with moderate heat. But it does not support frost.

It is a species that requires wet soils frequently or at least flooded. In addition, having a pH 5.5-8 and rich in nitrogen

As for the diseases that can damage it, there is Uromyces dactylidis, a fungus that causes blackish and dusty leaves.


  • It is a wild plant that is considered weed and invasive, although there are ornamental varieties that are not invasive.
  • It was used as a medicinal plant for the treatment of hemorrhoids and ulcers, through topical application. It was also used as an astringent, being effective for cases of diarrhea.
  • Applying the infusion on the skin acts as a tonic to clean and eliminate impurities.
  • The tender leaves were used for stews, salads. But during fruiting the leaves become poisonous.
