Sinusitis: symptoms, causes and home remedies to combat it

What is sinusitis ? Sinusitis occurs when the sinuses (between the bones of the forehead, cheeks, nose, and eyes) become inflamed. When we have an allergy or a cold, the mucus is expelled from the sinuses, but if it remains inside and the mucosa that covers the sinuses does not come out, it becomes inflamed causing infection and congestion. This inflammation can be caused by fungi, viruses, or bacteria.

Pollution and dry environments can aggravate sinusitis.

We can differentiate two types of sinusitis :

* Acute sinusitis : it is usually caused by bacteria and viruses and the symptoms disappear in less than a month.

* Chronic sinusitis : in this case the cause is usually a fungus or bacteria. We speak of chronic sinusitis when the symptoms last for 3 or more months.

Home and natural remedies for sinusitis

  • Apply hot compresses or cloths (be careful not to burn the skin) on the face several times a day .
  • The vapors come in handy in cases of sinusitis. The most suitable plants are eucalyptus , pine, mint , verbena , devil’s claw , etc. These medicinal plants will help us reduce inflammation in the area and improve congestion. You can use them in fresh or dried essential oils by adding them to a bowl of boiling water and laying on it with a towel over your head. Be careful not to burn yourself.
  • The Ginger is another natural remedy indicated for sinusitis. Prepare an infusion with a teaspoon of grated ginger. This rhizome is a powerful anti-inflammatory, so it will be of great help in this case. Also with ginger you can make poultices to apply locally.
  • Another natural remedy for sinusitis is turmeric, which is a great natural anti-inflammatory. You can make turmeric drinks at home  .
  • It is also very important that you improve your immune system . I recommend that you introduce foods rich in vitamin E into your diet that will come in handy, and not only for sinusitis!
  • Stop smoking , so you help enormously in both acute and chronic sinusitis.
  • Room humidifiers are another solution to sinusitis.

These are general recommendations, go to a health professional so that they can recommend the most appropriate in your particular case.
