Tillandsia usneoides  also known as Spanish Moss, Agavepalo, Hay, Paste, Diaper del Niño or Barba del viejo . It belongs to the Bromeliaceae family, of the Tillandsia genus, made up of about 600 epiphytic plants. Being native to the American continent.

Characteristics of the Tillandsia usneoides

Epiphytic plant that grows on trees and can reach 6 m in length.

The stems are covered with small, scaly, silver-gray leaves.

The flowers are green and small that have no ornamental value. It blooms in the summer, but if they are grown indoors they won’t.

The fruit is a capsule 2.5 cm long, cylindrical and ends in a short beak. When ripe, it opens to release the seeds, which are narrow with a feathery appendage at the base.

It is a kind  of interior but without a pot. Ideally, tie it to a stainless wire, a piece of cork or tree bark and then place it on a window.

It prefers to be in semi-shade or an illuminated exhibition but without direct sun.

The climate should be humid, but temperatures of -13˚C do not suit you.

Being epiphytes they do not require soil, since the nutrients are taken from the air or from the tree (if it lives on it, but it does not harm it).

For irrigation it should be immersed in lime-free water for about 5 minutes with its base. This should be done every 2 days in the summer and every 15 days in the winter. The plant should be sprayed daily.

Pruning is not necessary, as well as special fertilizers.

It is a plant resistant to pests or diseases. Although sometimes they can be used by some birds for the construction of their nests.

They multiply by means of a piece of plant, tying it to a piece of bark or cork.


It is a plant that is used for ornamental purposes, either for religious festivals or during Christmas seasons.

Previously it was used to fill carpets and mattresses, even for car seats and to make ropes.

It is also used to carve dishes, as fodder for animals and for crop clothing.
