Tuff bricks

The tuff bricks

Tuff bricks are blocks made of volcanic rock used in the construction and gardening sectors. The stone used as building stone is lithoid tuff, light and compact. In the past, tuff bricks were the preferred solution for the construction of buildings and homes. They represented a guarantee in terms of reliability and resistance as well as one of the few possible options given the backwardness of construction techniques and materials. For this reason in Italy there are numerous villages built entirely of tuff as well as farmhouses and old country houses still solid and with a timeless charm. Historic places such as Naples and Rome, for example, are rich in tuff constructions, among the most elegant and ancient in the city.

Tuff bricks: technical characteristics

Tuff bricks are ordinary stone blocks characterized by lightness and porosity. The tuff bricks guarantee an appreciable thermal insulation and are characterized by a granular structure on which their marked porosity depends. The grainy texture that distinguishes them makes the bricks in tuffhave a friable and very permeable structure. They are able to absorb the humidity of the environment without particular consequences in terms of solidity and structure. Taking these characteristics into consideration, we can understand the reason for one of the most expensive devices for those in the trade: it is preferable not to plaster the tuff walls immediately. The tuff bricks, given their inherent humidity, need to dry in the air for as long as possible, in order to allow the evaporation of water and acquire greater structural solidity and compactness.

The advantages brought by the use of tuff bricks

Tuff bricks are still used for numerous uses, despite having been almost totally abandoned in the construction sector. Tuff bricks have a series of advantages which often play a decisive role in their choice. First of all, we can take into due account the fact that tuff bricks have considerable dimensions, which make any construction quick. In addition, they have a very low cost compared to other building materials comparable to tuff bricks. The fact that they are light and easy to handle means that they are also chosen, and above all, by those who do not have particular strength or engineering knowledge. To erect a wall in the garden or to delimit some flower beds, tuff bricks are the ideal solution and within anyone’s reach.

Tuff bricks: Types of tuff bricks and possible uses

The tuff bricks on the market have roughly the same properties but differ in small characteristics that make each type more suitable for one use rather than another. The Viterbo tuff, for example, is ideal for coverings and floors. Yellow or gray in color, it is perfect for decorating gardens. The Apulian tuff, on the other hand, of calcareous origin and with a light color, is widely used in the construction sector thanks to its high resistance. The Campania tuff, yellow or gray, is the most famous and has a very ancient formation. As far as distribution is concerned, we can see how the tuff brick sector includes different elements: blocks, tiles, curbs, cubes and bricks. Depending on the uses for which they are intended, then, we will find them more or less worked.
