The Manihot esculenta, also known as manioc, tapioca, aipim or yucca, is a shrub native to South America. It is an evergreen plant, which reaches 4-5 meters, and that unfortunately can only be grown in warm climates without frost since it is very sensitive to cold. In fact, the minimum temperature must be higher than 15ºC.

In addition, you need fertile, well-draining soil, and of course a regular supply of compost for your roots to have excellent quality. It is grown mainly for its tuberous roots, which have these uses:

  • Culinary: it has the same as potatoes. Whether turned into flour to make breads or cakes, or as a garnish, it has a very pleasant taste.
  • Animal feed: the tubers, once dried in the sun for one or two days, are fed to livestock.

Plants of the genus Yucca are shrubs or evergreen trees that are characterized by having more or less triangular shaped leaves whose tips are often thorny. They are native to North and Central America, and can reach a height of between 2 and 6 meters depending on the species.

They are widely grown in the hot and dry regions of the world, since all they need to be happy is well-drained soil and a supply of water from time to time. In addition, the vast majority of species withstand frosts down to -4ºC without suffering damage.
