Why is the peony considered the queen of flowers?

Few flowers can compete with ” the queen of flowers “, the peony. Their large flower heads with wavy petals come in a wide range of colors: white, yellow, pink, coral, red, and so on. Also, they have a sweet scent and last a long time in a vase. Therefore, it is not surprising that they are in great demand for weddings and other important events, since they are cut flowers .

In addition to being popular, they are very easy to grow and will thrive in almost all climates. Most peonies are herbaceous, although there are some shrubby species that can reach up to 2.5 meters in height.

Almost all peonies are deciduous, although there are some perennials. When young, the foliage is bronze and when autumn comes it turns an intense reddish color. In spring, each new stem ends in one or more large, rose-like flowers that have short stamens in the center. Depending on the varieties, peonies bloom from spring to summer.

Once established, peonies will flourish abundantly for many years, it is even said that they can live more than 100 years if you take care of them properly. These beautiful flowers prefer full sun, so you should provide them with at least six hours of uninterrupted sunlight.

Although it adapts to any type of soil, standing water can be a problem, so be sure to find one that has good drainage. Dig a hole two or three times wider than the root and amend the soil with a good dose of rotten manure or regular compost and bone meal.

Pay a lot of attention to the depth of the planting: if you plant the roots deep they will not flower, so they must be just below the surface of the soil. On the other hand, place them one meter apart.

The types of double flowers will require additional stakes to keep their large flower heads. Heavy rains can hurt them, so be sure to keep them protected.
