How much to water the ficus bonsai plant

This type of plant is typical of tropical regions, it is reproduced dwarf thanks to particular pruning techniques. The ficus bonsai should be watered generously every time you notice the slightly dry soil, the important thing is to use criteria without exaggerating. Use water at room temperature and never cold or hot! To help the dwarf plant maintain the right humidity, since it is typical of wetlands, spray it every day without overdoing it: exceeding it can cause diseases such as fungi. Consider that during the winter, the plant is to be placed inside the house, where thanks to the heating the temperature will be higher. It is therefore advisable to water it more often. If, on the other hand, it is placed in a cooler environment, spray it.

Taking care of the ficus bonsai means never leaving it in the cold, since it comes from very humid areas, it cannot stand it. You can safely place it in the courtyard during the summer, in autumn and spring, it is important that the temperature does not drop below 15 degrees centigrade. Like many other species of bonsai, the ficus must be exposed to the sun’s rays (obviously not when in July and August the temperature exceeds 32 degrees centigrade), the position in the shade alone is not really adequate. Do not forget to prune the dwarf plant regularly, thus avoiding the deformation of the structure and the shape that was given to it. In case of cuts or breaks of the branches and the trunk, it is very important to cover the “wounds” with a special healing paste.

How and when to fertilize the ficus bonsai


Regarding the fertilization of bonsai ficus, remember that all chemical products suitable and approved for this type of plants can be found at authorized dealers. The fertilization of the soil should be done about every two weeks during the summer, while a little less often, or every four weeks, in the winter months. The most used and recommended products are liquid fertilizers or organic pellet fertilizers. In addition to fertilization, it is very important to repotting about every two years, or to replace the old soil with new soil. During this operation it is very important to prune the roots, take the opportunity to shorten them, as this species of bonsai tolerates this operation very well. Once repotted with the new soil proceed to fertilize.

This dwarf plant species is very resistant to diseases and parasites. Despite this natural predisposition to resist it, the lack of light and the air that is too dry contribute to weaken the bonsai ficus. In a weakened situation it is more vulnerable and risks being attacked by mites and parasites. If the plant is affected by diseases, it can also be seen through the discolored or dry leaves. In this case it is very important to isolate the dwarf plant to prevent it from infecting the other plants that are next to it, thus avoiding the chain effect.
