Pomegranate bonsai

Variety, climate, exposure

To create the most beautiful bonsai, the dwarf variety of this plant is mainly used for the smaller fruits. This does not mean that the normal variety cannot be used, however, considering the size of the fruits, some precautions will be taken such as leaving a maximum of two fruits per branch, and therefore avoiding a weighting of the sapling. It is a plant that does well in a sunny environment with a Mediterranean-type climate, on the other hand it suffers very low temperatures, so it is necessary to protect the sapling from the cold and frosts, which are very dangerous for the plant. The ideal location is therefore that of an environment exposed to the sun throughout the year. The land it prefers should be made up of 50% universal soil, 30% red soil and 20% sand.

Watering and fertilizers

Watering must be carried out daily as in all bonsai trees, at all times of the year and must be increased on the hottest days and in any case after the flowers have blossomed. The water should be poured slowly so that the soil has time to absorb more and remain moist for longer. The operation must be repeated at least a couple of times, in order to be sure that the substrate has absorbed the water. The bonsai should be generously fertilized at least once a week, until the flowers bloom. A fertilizer with a high phosphate content should be used. Fertilizers are essential because they integrate those substances that tend to run out quickly.

Pruning and repotting

As for pruning, the heavier branches are removed in summer, while the shoots are removed between April and June. All the superfluous should be cut: dry, diseased or broken branches. It should also be remembered that the pomegranate produces many internal branches which if not cut make the tree look like a bush. Repotting should be done more or less in March, every two years. But the moment must be decided carefully, observing the shoots and the growing condition of the tree. We must not reduce the root system too much and in this regard it is necessary to show particular attention because the pomegranate tends to originate the capillaries right at the apex of the roots, the capillaries are instead necessary for a rapid vegetative restart after repotting. The substrate must be draining to avoid water stagnation,

Pomegranate bonsai: The styles

As with other trees, even the pomegranate bonsaithey can be given different forms. It lends itself to styles with the inclined trunk, or with the cascading trunk, the casual erect or the raft trunk. The growth and shape of the plant can be adjusted with the use of wires and tie rods. The copper wires, two or three millimeters thick, can be used to correct the branches, especially the younger ones, which are still available to take on new shapes. Before carrying out the operation it is advisable to water the sapling a few hours before to reduce the risk of breaking the branches. Some branches can be lowered by anchoring these threads to the vase. The braces instead must be used and applied during the growing season, even if it is not a mistake to use them in other periods in order to maintain the results achieved.
