Dracaena Marginata

The dracena marginata

The dracena is a plant that develops a characteristic and very decorative crown, but which does not require a lot of space to grow and its development can be easily contained: for these reasons, as well as for its specific needs related to the environment and climate, it is a perfect plant for growing indoors, even at home or in an apartment. The dracena marginata is native to Africa and South America, therefore from areas with a warm and tropical climate, therefore it does not tolerate the harsh winter temperatures, from which it must necessarily find shelter. The name of the plant reveals its main characteristics: “Dracena” derives from “dragon” and the edges of the leaves are edged with a pale red that embellishes the foliage of this plant. The dracena marginata is evergreen, so if grown correctly it can be a perennial decoration element of the apartment: in nature it can reach two meters in height, but at home its development is easily controlled through adequate pruning, which concerns mainly the cutting of dry leaves and no longer productive branches to contain the shape and optimize the development of the plant.

Cultivation

As seen, the dracena marginatait is a plant that must be grown in sheltered spaces and therefore is placed in pots. In reality, in areas with a particularly mild climate it can also find its place outdoors, as long as the plant is never exposed to temperatures below six or seven degrees and always sheltered from the winds. The dracena can find a place in bright areas, but which are not exposed to direct sunlight, which could burn the leaves. The soil must be well drained, because the dracena fears water stagnation, and it must be composed of soil and peat rich in organic matter. The humid environment is the one preferred by this type of plant, which requires not too abundant but frequent watering: in this way the humidity can be kept constant without it being necessary to exceed either in one direction or the other.

Reproduction and repotting

Reproduction of the dracena marginatait occurs mainly by cuttings: one proceeds by cutting a young but sufficiently developed branch among those that branch directly from the stem to give life to a new cultivation. The cut will be made about 10 cm from the branch point, and then move on to the elimination of any leaves present on the branch. At that point, the cutting thus obtained can simply be placed in the ground, near the mother plant, and exposed to the same environmental and climatic conditions required by the adult plant. When the rooting has taken place, the plant will begin to grow: at this point it will be possible to arrange its arrangement in a separate pot, protected by a plastic bag that will be opened daily to ensure the right exchange of air, until the seedling is strong enough to be grown with the care used for adult plants. At this point, once the plant has reached the size of an adult specimen it will not even be necessary to provide for frequent repotting: rather, it will be sufficient to operate once every three or four years to change the soil and offer a richer soil in nutrients. to the plant.

Diseases and parasites

The first warning sign regarding the health of plants consists of the leaves: if they start to be burned, the fault will probably be direct exposure to sunlight, while if they begin to wither there could be errors in watering, which it can be too abundant or, on the contrary, insufficient. If the nature of the problem is linked to some bad habit in the cultivation of the plant, it is easy to remedy, while it is not so in case of infestation by parasites and fungi, to which the dracena is particularly sensitive: in this case it is necessary to intervene completely eliminating the presence of parasites, to prevent colonization from resuming and continuing to deprive the plant of the nutritional elements necessary for its survival.
