Irrigation of the Epiphyllum

This characteristic cactus comes from South America and is part of the thick and varied taxonomic grouping of the Hylocereeae. The plant, usually placed in embellishment inside the houses, has a fair need to be wet, based on its position and the current climatic season. In the spring and summer seasons it will be generously and constantly watered, even several times a week, while the wetting will be moderate and limited during the cold season, on average monthly. Although the evergreen prefers a humid and not very dry habitat, it will be necessary in any case not to overdo the irrigation and to be very careful in avoiding the formation of puddles and water stagnations, which can damage the roots of Epiphyllum. , severely weakening it.

Plant care and cultivation

Epiphyllum is typically a plant to be kept inside the house and must be equipped with soil full of organic components, such as peat and silt, and sandy materials, in order to avoid that the base is excessively compact and ensure the correct drainage of the land. Every two years or so, at the end of the flowering period, repotting works of the cactus will be allowed, if the stem and the root system have grown considerably and the necessary and regular nourishment of the evergreen is at risk. Conversely, the plant does not require special pruning operations, as the periodic removal, by hand or with a suitable tool, of old branches and yellowed or dried leaves, potentially capable of transmitting various pathologies to the cactus, is completely sufficient.

Fertilization and fertilization

As far as fertilization is concerned, a few simple rules must be followed. As a rule, the plant lives in a medium-sized container and will need to be fertilized regularly to ensure the right nutrients are needed. Fertilization will be carried out every two weeks in the vegetative period, even in the first days of October, and suitably limited or even interrupted in the autumn and winter seasons. Fertilizers of a solid nature, so-called slow release, or more appropriately of a liquid nature, diluted in the watering can be used. In any case, a specific fertilizer for flowering plants must be used and contain, in addition to the microelements, a significant and adequate presence of potassium and phosphoric elements.

Exposure and possible diseases

This evergreen can be kept inside the apartment for the whole year and must be housed in a humid and highly illuminated habitat, but not directly affected by the sun’s rays or adequately shielded. Moreover, the cactus suffers from excessively harsh climatic conditions and, in the cold season, must be suitably repaired and not exposed to sudden changes in temperature or sudden air flows. Finally, the perennial plant can be subjected to attacks by various insects and parasites, such as fleas and the fearsome cochineal. In this case, it will be necessary to promptly eliminate them, cleaning the plant with soaps or similar products and removing them manually, if possible, or using a specific insecticide.
