Spatifillium plant

The spatifillo plant: characteristics of the species

The spatifillo is considered by flower growers to be a rustic plant not in the sense that it lives outside during the winter, but because it has a truly remarkable resistance at home even in non-optimal environmental conditions. Other species of the spatifillo plant are also cultivated such as: the spontaneous canneifolium spatifillo in Venezuela; the spatifillo blandum native to Jamaica; the spatifillo wallisi is a species native to Colombia and Venezuela and is the only one cultivated mainly for ornamental purposes. It forms very vigorous frizz, with rather narrow leaves. The spathe are small and white, very elegant. Then there is a spontaneous species that grows in Costa Rica and Panama which is called: “plant of peace”. The main feature of this plant is the leaf which is long and sharp, shiny,

The spatifillo plant: sowing, transplanting

About twenty-five species originating from Tropical America are attributed to the genus Spatiphyllus. This plant shows great resistance in our homes where it can live even in unfavorable and sometimes not very bright environmental conditions. The naturally shiny leaves take on a particular shine by cleaning them with a dry wool rag. Spatiphyllum plants reproduce by seed, a rather long and complicated practice, but more often they multiply by subdivision of the tufts, or by detaching the basal pollen. Carry out the agamic multiplication operation at the end of flowering and in any case in late spring, when the temperature is naturally favorable for a vegetative restart. The multiplication must therefore be implemented through the division of the strongest tufts.

The spatafillo plant: soil and fertilization

In the operation of potting young plants or repotting adult plants, which must be carried out every 2-3 years, use a mixed soil of peat, soil of well decomposed leaves, small expanded clay or coarse river sand. Watering must be done in moderation, avoiding any stagnation of water. The amount of water to be administered and the frequency of interventions you will have to adjust according to the ambient temperature. From March to October it is necessary to administer a fertilizer, suspending any fertilization in the other months. This plant during the summer can be moved from the apartment to the balcony as long as it is placed in a shaded area. At home the plant lives indifferently in bright or shady places. The spatifillo plant belongs to the Araceae family.

Spathiphyllum plant: The Spatifyll plant: flowering

The flowering of the spatifillo plant occurs in spring or summer; the flowers are carried by long stems that rise above the foliage. The biggest enemy of this plant is the black aphid. The aphid can also affect the plant on the inflorescences in bud. If affected by black aphid, the plant must be treated immediately with specific products. Due to the beauty and whiteness of its flowers, the spatifillo plant, in recent years, has been used a lot to decorate the town halls or churches on the occasion of wedding ceremonies. Often the spatifillo plant is given as a gift on the occasion of the start of a business or the inauguration of a new house. It is considered a well-wishing plant. The plant is also given as a gift to make wedding wishes.
