Garden succulents: few problems

A garden of succulents bestows more joys than commitments. It is tidy, not dirty, in the sense that there is no loss of leaves and, above all, it does not require particularly difficult or frequent maintenance. It allows us to live our garden in a calm and not frantic way. Another feature of the succulent garden is that of longevity. Plants take decades to develop, and they are also particularly strong. As they grow, they develop immune systems that make them nearly unassailable by parasites. Not having great needs for soil, fertilization and irrigation, after all, are also economical. Having a garden of succulents is a “modus vivendi”, it means that you like tranquility, moreover they are “collector’s” plants, sometimes very rare.

Recreate a habitat in a succulent garden

The most beautiful succulent plant gardens are those that manage to recreate the original habitat of the plants present. Taking cacti, for example, you will have to pay attention not only to plants, but also to spaces. A beautiful succulent garden is not necessarily dense, quite the opposite. Once you have established the place to create your garden, it is good that you read up on the type of plants you want to plant. The cacti, in fact, should not be placed too close. First because over the years they grow a lot, second because in nature they live in environments where space is certainly not a problem. Having decided on plants and spaces, we move on to the preparation of the soil, usually earth strewn with stones. Place your “succulents” and enjoy the harmony that succulents can give.

Caring for succulents

Taking care of the “succulents” that live in your succulent garden is not particularly challenging. There are, however, some small rules to follow. In fact, if in nature they are used to getting by very well by themselves, in captivity they need a little more care. Inside your garden it will be good that you prepare drains, in which to put drainage pipes, and it will be necessary that the slope of the ground is 1 or 2%, so that the water does not create, over time, harmful stagnation. During the vegetation period, they need to be fertilized, usually once a year is enough. They do not need pruning, but if there are broken or diseased “branches”, they must be eliminated. Basically a few things, a little water every now and then,

Which succulents to use?

The creation of a garden of succulents will give you the opportunity to play with shapes, sizes and colors, both of the green part and of the blooms. The Cactaceae family, for example, has more than 3000 species, and if you have plenty of space you can also turn to the Agavaceae, plants that in the space of 20-25 years, become about one and a half meters in diameter. There are also small “succulents” such as the Azioaceae. Seedlings normally without thorns, but which produce very colorful blooms. In short, you are spoiled for choice. Succulents are also easily reproducible, it is sufficient, in most cases, to cut a branch from the mother plant and plant it in a pot. In the space of a year, the branch will also have transformed
