How to make a natural anti-viral hand sanitizer with Aloe Vera for Coronavirus COVID-19

As recommended by the World Health Organization , it is important to allow the formulated hand sanitizer to quarantine for approximately 72 hours before use, which makes it more effective.

Although this relates to a homemade Aloe Vera hand sanitizer, it is still important to let the sanitizer go into quarantine in some sense.

How to stay safe in a pandemic

To stay safe in a pandemic like COVID-19, it is important to recognize the symptoms and if you are experiencing them. By being aware of how you feel, how you care for yourself, and who you surround yourself with, you can keep yourself and others safe.

Symptoms related to the COVID-19 Virus presented by the World Health Organization include fever, cough, shortness of breath, and breathing difficulties.

There have been more serious cases in which infections have occurred that have caused pneumonia, kidney failure, severe acute respiratory syndrome. In very serious cases, even death.

Stay safe!

To stay safe, stay on top of the latest news regarding the COVID-19 outbreak. You can stay updated by consulting the website of the World Health Organization and also among your local and national health authorities.

There is a worldwide spread of this virus and most countries are not safe from its reach.

Common symptoms are mild and not too severe. Often a person who has contracted the virus reports mild symptoms and is able to regain normal health. In some cases, it can be more serious, so it is important to be aware of how you feel and to report any symptoms that may arise and start to get worse.

Social distancing is so important during COVID-19

Keep your distance from others to stop the spread of the virus. As humans we are naturally social but this is a time when we have to learn to distance ourselves from others by at least 1 meter away.

Even if someone has no symptoms, keeping your distance is still necessary . This ensures that those small droplets of fluid that are expelled through a person’s nose or mouth, and which may carry the virus, do not reach your respiratory system.

If someone is close enough, they could breathe in those droplets, and if they contain the virus, you could essentially contract COVID-19.

Whenever you can, throw away any used tissues, especially in public. You can use a tissue or your elbow to cover your mouth if you sneeze or cough.

A little distance could help us all!

It is very crucial, but not the most important, since every step you take to protect yourself is equally important, you should stay home if you feel sick.

Any signs of fever, cough, or shortness of breath should be monitored by a doctor. As recommended by the World Health Organization. People should stay home and call a healthcare professional before reporting to the doctor’s office.

From there, medical professionals will inform people of the next step in the process and how to proceed in the safest way possible.

By following these security protocols, the spread of COVID-19 is stopped. It is essential to stay informed by health professionals and to follow any advice they give.

Follow any local procedures designated by your employer or the procedures in the area where you live on how to keep yourself and others safe from COVID-19.

The importance of washing your hands

Wash your hands and wash them often. It is highly recommended to use a hand sanitizer in conjunction with hand washing.

For a thorough cleaning, wash your hands with plain soap and water. You can also choose to use an Aloe Vera hand soap that can add more moisture to the skin.

It is sufficient to wash your hands for 20 seconds or more for a thorough cleaning. This will ensure the removal of any viruses or germs that may be lingering on your skin.

You should try not to touch your mouth, eyes, or nose. This is because the hands touch various surfaces that allow any viruses or germs to adhere.

If you are infected, your hands can carry the virus to your nose, mouth, or eyes. Those are the holes that the virus can enter and essentially infect you.

This is why it is extremely crucial to wash your hands after meeting someone. Or after anything you’ve touched that may have been touched by someone who has contracted the virus.

Aloe Vera is beneficial and healing for the skin and is often used as a moisturizer for dry and cracked skin. Due to the importance of washing your hands often and thoroughly during this pandemic outbreak, it can cause the skin to become dry and cracked for some.

Follow-up with an Aloe Vera moisturizer can combat dry skin , allowing you to continue washing your hands as often as you should.

You can find Aloe Vera gel , disinfectants and moisturizers in almost every store on the island for hand creams or lotions.

The importance of using an antiviral hand sanitizer

Antiviral hand sanitizer can be extremely helpful during a pandemic like COVID-19.

An important factor to keep in mind is that the sanitizer must be 60% alcohol or higher so that it can accurately kill any germs or viruses that may be lingering on the skin’s surface.

Please note that both hand sanitizer and hand washing go hand in hand and one should not be done more than the other, but must be done equally.

You also have the option of formulating the Aloe Vera gel combined with added ethyl alcohol and essential oils (for their aromatic and antibacterial properties).

This is to provide an in-depth hand sanitizer while also providing moisturizing effects to skin that may remain dry after constant hand washing.

The most common essential oil that people add to their handmade sanitizer is tea tree oil .

How to Make an All-Natural Antiviral Hand Sanitizer with Aloe Vera

The strength of the disinfectant is key when proceeding to make yours. Today, it is very difficult to find hand sanitizer in stores. This is a big reason so many people are starting to make their own hand sanitizer.

First of all, find natural or store-bought Aloe Vera gel that can be found in almost any grocery store.

There is also the possibility of buying fresh Aloe Vera , but keep in mind that fresh aloe can be much thicker than store bought.

This can cause the hand sanitizer to become sticky, which means you’ll have to rub the sanitizer on your hands much more than if you were using store-bought Aloe.

Because alcohol can be very harsh on the skin, using an ingredient like Aloe Vera can combat the dryness that alcohol causes .

Most importantly, find alcohol that is 60% or more. People have used vodka, but rubbing alcohol is recommended . Because vodka does not usually contain a high enough percentage of alcohol to be completely effective.

Kill that virus!

This ensures that it will kill, more specifically viruses, on the surface. The alcohol acts as a preservative that will extend the life of the sanitizer and will keep the Aloe Vera fresh if used.

It is common for fresh Aloe Vera to spoil after so long. Alcohol will prevent that from happening.

Many people don’t mind the smells of alcohol, but others may want to have a scented hand sanitizer. The most common essential oil used is tea tree due to its natural antibacterial properties.

Essential oils not only offer a pleasant scent, but they also have antiviral, antibacterial, and sometimes antifungal properties . You can also use other essential oils depending on the scent you prefer.

Base for a hand sanitizer gel

  • Mix 1 cup of alcohol 60% or + with ½ cup of Aloe Vera gel
  • Then add your essences: 15 drops of the essential oil will be enough for the formulation and should provide you with a powerful aroma that will last.
  • Beat all the ingredients together until it becomes a consistent gel.
  • Before pouring the mixture into the spray bottles , you must first sanitize the bottles by spraying some rubbing alcohol on the inside of the bottle, letting it sit, which also allows the alcohol to evaporate and sterilize the inside of the bottle.
  • Pour the mixture into the spray bottle and label it.

Antiviral Hand Sanitizer Recipes Including Aloe Vera

Recipe 1

There are several formulations that are helpful. Here is a recipe that is worth around 60 milliliters and includes:

  • 1 tablespoon of Aloe Vera gel
  • ½ tablespoon of vegetable glycerin or if you prefer you can also use vitamin E oil or both

Vitamin E oil and vegetable glycerin can be very beneficial for the skin and can be helpful in fighting dry skin caused by alcohol. Vegetable glycerin locks in moisture from the skin, as does vitamin E oil. Note that both are optional and only add extra moisture.

Next and as mentioned before, you need a high alcohol content that is 60% or more . You will need 3 tablespoons of alcohol.

20 drops of tea tree oil and 10 drops of lavender oil . Since both essential oils offer antibacterial properties, it can be very helpful to combine them in your hand sanitizer. This recipe includes a greater amount of essential oils and includes two different types in combinations.

Before each use, shake the bottle to make sure you are getting the most out of the hand sanitizer.

Recipe 2

Here is another useful recipe. This recipe will create another 60 milliliters of sanitizer gel.

  • Start by using a spray bottle that is over 60 milliliters in capacity.
  • In that bottle add 5 drops of vitamin E oil (for softer hands but it is optional)
  • 3 tablespoons of witch hazel with Aloe Vera (witch hazel can also remedy dry skin and can be purchased in health food stores),
  • 3 tablespoons of alcohol of 60% or more .
  • 5 drops of lemon oil, 5 drops of tea tree oil .
  • 5 drops of orange oil .
  • You can also add distilled water to complete the rest of the hand sanitizer. Shake the bottle very well for at least 20 seconds.

You may be wondering why this recipe calls for orange oil. As I mentioned earlier about the other essential oils, they offer incredible antibacterial properties.

The orange, more specifically, offers those same benefits. The combination of all 3 oils will only provide you with a more effective homemade hand sanitizer. As they say, the more the merrier.

Recipe 3

If you decide to try a somewhat stronger hand sanitizer, you can try this recipe:

  • 1 tablespoon of 99% isopropyl alcohol.
  • ½ tablespoon of vitamin E oil (always optional).
  • ¼ cup of aloe vera gel .
  • 1 tablespoon of distilled water .
  • 2-5 drops of cinnamon oil (add more if you think you need it).
  • 2-5 drops of tea tree oil .
  • 2-5 drops of lemon oil (also known for its antibacterial and antifungal properties).
  • 2-5 drops of peppermint oil (this can be strong depending on the person, so start with one drop at a time).

As mentioned above, before each use, shake the bottle to mix well.

Recipe 4

We have a more complex recipe here and it is not for everyone, but if you are dealing with extremely dry skin from constant hand washing, this recipe may be for you.

If you are up to the challenge, be our guest. This should be about 8 ounces. Start by combining:

  • ½ cup of Aloe Vera gel .
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol (70-90%)
  • You also have the option of adding ¼ cup of witch hazel .
  • Next, add 10-20 drops of essential oils . This is where you have some freedom to add the oils you want: thyme , cinnamon , rosemary , eucalyptus , peppermint , lavender , clove , tea tree, and orange . You can use each of these if you decide to.
  • Start with 10 drops and add more if you prefer a stronger aroma. You can mix and match these oils and as an added moisturizer you can also
  • add 1 tablespoon of moisturizing lotion and 1 tablespoon of vegetable glycerin .

Make sure to mix the ingredients very well. Before each use, shake the bottle to ensure that you are getting the most out of your hand sanitizer.

Staying safe until the pandemic breaks out

Key advice on Coronavirus: Maintain social distancing.

Being around a large group of people is now not highly recommended. Many businesses are beginning to allow only the drive-thru , delivery and pick-up, and not allowing customers to sit and meet at their businesses.

Many people have started working from home. It is essential to avoid groups of 10 or more people, as the World Health Organization has recommended in an attempt to stop the spread of the virus.

I’ve talked about this before, but keeping your distance from anyone is important and I have to repeat it. Try to avoid shaking hands or having any close contact with another person, especially if they have a cough, fever, and shortness of breath .

According to the recommendation of the World Health Organization , you should continue to wash your hands systematically and use hand sanitizer gel together.

Although it would make more sense to wear gloves while you are away, the World Health Organization says that hand washing and using hand sanitizer are much more effective than wearing gloves.

Self-isolation is the key

During this time of isolation, as it may be called, it is time to prevent COVID-19 from spreading further.

The World Health Organization asks that you stay home if you feel bad. You should first call your doctor to tell you the strict steps to follow with these symptoms.

The fewer people who leave their homes, the less likely they are to spread the virus or contract it.

Stay tuned for new updates by checking the World Health Organization website and watching the news for guidelines for your own country.

Be sure to check only the World Health Organization , national news, and updates and reports from local authorities. This will ensure that the information given is in fact true and credible.

Stay calm and as long as you follow the protocols, you will do everything you can. The World Health Organization offers advice on how to cope with the anxiety and stress that this pandemic has caused for many people. (Tips for the public, 2020).

These tips also extend to children who may also be dealing with stress and anxiety. If you decide to travel, wash your hands constantly, avoid any contact with other people around you and if you find yourself dealing with the symptoms of COVID-19. Tell your closest group and then contact a medical professional as soon as possible to prevent those symptoms from worsening and causing further spread.

The main goal of any country right now is to stop the spread of the COVID-19 virus, so in the meantime. Keep washing your hands, using your sanitizer, and stay home as much as you can. People will get through this together.
