Plants are extraordinary living organisms which, with each study that is carried out on them, prove to be worth all these enthusiastic adjectives; in fact, especially from the evolutionary point of view, they can be taken as clear examples of the theories intuited by Sir Charles Darwin since, starting as we know from a single primordial plant-organism (a few million years ago), they are developed in the most extravagant, unthinkable, different and incredible ways: just think that the baobab, a living fossil plant with an incredible circumference, is a plant exactly like the aquatic plant we have in our aquarium, in the same way as the huge pine and the Secular redwoods are relatives to the desert cactus. All this almost makes one doubt that they have a common «root» in that primordial plant organism. But what most impresses us, or at least what most impressed us, is the fact that plants have adapted to very different and sometimes opposite conditions: there are plants which, due to changes in the earth’s crust, live in a very different area. sulphurous, they have learned to take the correct substances not from the roots (of which they have discarded), but from the condensed humidity of the air, through specially shaped leaves suitable for this.

There are many families of plants, which – we assure you – are all interesting and each can be associated with an interesting food for thought. However, if we want to marvel at the magical evolution of plants with simplicity then we must consider succulents: we believe we are not making a serious mistake if we say that succulents have taken a step that no animal, not even man, can ever take. In fact, from kindergarten we are taught that in order for plants to survive, they must be watered, that is, they must be given water, with which they absorb substances from the soil through the roots and therefore manage to survive by carrying out their normal mechanisms. Unfortunately, however, there are places on Earth that have progressively become desert, or poor in life and water, in which some plants have found themselves living, how to do? Extraordinary: the plants that today we call «fat» (but which actually define themselves as «succulent») have transformed their leaves into needles in order to reduce the exchange surface with the outside through which the little water could «escape» taken, they transformed the interior into reservoir fabrics to store precious drops of water for months and months and learned to maximize the efficiency of use of the water that they could collect from the very small humidity at night or from the rains they visited once a year area.

When we describe all the extraordinary evolutionary transformations of succulents, we immediately think of the classic huge cactus of the American deserts that is so popular in western movies and in many children’s cartoons. In reality there are many species of succulent plants (by the way, this name indicates that they possess soft tissues which retain and conserve water) with many shapes and many particularities, and in fact in this article we are talking about mesembriantemo: this succulent plant it has a fairly articulate official name that will not be common to most readers at all, but we can reassure you that it is a very widespread plant and that each of you will have seen at least a lot in your life so far, let’s put our hand on fire Without doubts.

The mesembriantemo is a real succulent plant, one of those that despite the appearance of the abundant colored flowers is able to resist for very long weeks without a drop of water and that on the other hand suffers from the freezing temperatures of winter. In reality, this plant does not suffer from low temperatures (because, it will seem strange, but in the desert at night the temperature drops dramatically by even thirty and more gadi than the maximum of the day, which is no small thing), but it suffers from frosts, because the its fabrics are not suitable to withstand this and therefore if we live in an area where these atmospheric phenomena are common, it is good to take care to safeguard the plant by repairing it even lightly, but as long as it is not directly exposed to the nocturnal humidity that «falls» undeterred. Obviously, a succulent plant that respects itself is recognized for its very low need for water; in summer, also to ensure good development, it should be watered two or three times a week (not abundantly, in the desert there is never too much water!) while in winter it should be watered only if it does not rain for a whole month, so most part of the time it just doesn’t need to be watered.
