Bloody Needle (Geranium Sanguineum)

It is known as Bloody Needle and is a plant with large flowers that stand out from its companions, being easily perceptible in the distance. Its main color is purple, although it can also have others such as pink.

It can measure up to 40 cm since it has long stems with white hairs that gives it an enviable beauty. It usually blooms in late spring and summer.

Its name comes from the Latin sanguineus, which means from blood, while geranium comes from the Greek and was given to a type of plant that existed at that time.

Where can I find her?

Basically this plant can be found throughout the European continent, especially on the sides of Spain, France, southern Portugal, the entire Iberian Peninsula and part of Scandinavia.


This species needs to be in semi-shade or in complete shade for most of the day, since the full sun could cause great damage to its leaves and flowers.

It is recommended to sow it in spring since it is the ideal climate where it usually flourishes. It is generally compatible with any type of soil and we can add an extra ¾ to ensure it grows properly.

When summer arrives we must water it with at least two glasses of water to prevent it from drying out, since the heat can seriously affect its stems. In the rest of the seasons we can decrease this dose gradually and watching your reaction.

During the hottest months of the year ( summer and spring ) it is necessary to combine the water with some liquid fertilizer so that it maintains its natural qualities in this time of so much sun.

We can say that Geranium sanguineum is a plant with great aesthetic attributes that make it special to place on any balcony or window in our house, since its spectacular leaves attract the attention of anyone who looks at it. The care is basic and it is very similar to the rest of the species.

It has great resistance to cold, so if the temperature tends to drop too low in your area, you will not have to worry about it.

Its resistance and adaptability to change makes it perfect for any type of soil, so the type of soil you have in your home will do. Its rapid growth will require you to be attentive to your surroundings so that it does not interfere with the garden spaces.

Its flowering process can last a good part of the year, which will make your garden look one of the most beautiful with all the flowers that you will have thanks to it.

Make sure that when growing it you have a roof very close since it needs a lot of protection from the sun’s rays when in spring and summer the sun rises more than normal. When winter arrives you can be calmer since its bushes preserve the foliage to protect them from the cold.

It is important that the place where you grow it is clean and fresh, in which preferably the soil has constant drainage and that the boom does not present any stagnation.


There are two types of fungi and insects that usually affect this beautiful plant. These are Pirrottaea paupapercul a and Ramularia gerani by fungi, which mainly affect the stems and leaves.

The insect that has been identified is Zacladus geranii and it usually affects the entire root of the plant.
