Propagation of bulbs

Types of plants

There are many plants in the world, also because the plant world has undergone a powerful, slow but very long evolution, which began long before that of the animal world and which has proven to be able to overcome many different situations that have presented themselves on the face over the millions of years. of the Earth, especially from the climatic point of view. Each of these “challenges” has induced changes in plants, evolutions in fact, and some species have chosen to overcome them in bizarre ways. An example? Carnivorous plants: evidently the soil was scarce of nutrients but the air was full of insects and very small animals, so little by little these species have “figured out” how to capture insects, attracting them, and then developed substances suitable for digesting them. Extraordinary.

Bulb plants

It is not clear to us what was the “difficulty” that led some plant species to change the nature of their roots and the propagation mechanism, passing from the classic variant to a bulb one: in practice the plant is not the usual roots but is born from a hard bulbar structure drowned in the ground, under which some small roots arise, to be defined all secondary. Obviously the plant will not be able to generate seeds which then turn into bulbs, and so the ability to reproduce is due to other (sometimes incredibly random) mechanisms. Another characteristic of these plants is that they have an annual cycle: in autumn they die but the bulb keeps the heart of life within itself, it remains there in the arid and cold ground and in spring it will generate a new plant.

Propagation of bulbs

For those who have one or more bulb plant species and would like to multiply them, how can you do? With a normal plant it would be enough to collect the many seeds and someone will certainly sprout a seedling. With the bulb no: you have to wait for spring, when the plant begins to be reborn from its winter “home” and get it to develop a little. In this way, especially when we will see the formation of two structures at the base (divided stem or two large leaves, depending on the type of plant), it will be possible to cut neatly in two and obtain two bulb seeds which, placing them in well-formed earth and without diseases, will close, healing the wound inflicted and we will have two specimens identical to the first. The important thing is to carry out all these operations in total hygiene,
