Calicanto, cultivation techniques

How to water the calicanthus

Calicanthus is a plant used to rather harsh climates. Thanks to this ability, she is able to bloom even in rather extreme conditions. Therefore, as regards its watering, during the winter it can be suspended completely as the plant is able to settle for seasonal rains. As we proceed towards a warmer season, it is necessary to gradually increase the intensity of the wetting. Therefore, after a partial resumption of the watering process in spring, the calicanthus should be wet especially in summer. The trick to always keep in mind concerns the terrain. It is necessary to check that the soil has completely dried from the previous time before proceeding, in order to avoid rotting of the roots due to an excess of water.

Calicanthus care

Calicanthus comes from distant territories, but nevertheless is able to adapt to a rather temperate climate. It can resist well in both summer and winter. The ideal location for calicanthus is a sunny or even partially shaded area. As for pruning, the calicanthus should be pruned mainly in spring, after the flowers have withered. Its shrub tends to stretch a lot with time and therefore, in order to maintain a compact and dense behavior, pruning is widely recommended. Basically, however, this plant shows slow growth, so pruning of this type is rather sporadic. During the pruning process, most of the branches that are no more than two years old should be left intact and mostly pruning the older branches exclusively.

How to fertilize calicanthus

Also as regards the fertilization, the calicanthus does not present any particular needs. Rather, fertilization takes place only during the first 2-3 years after planting. The fertilizer that the plant needs is generally an organic fertilizer. The use of organic fertilizer allows the colicanthus to be supplied with a vast set of nutrients. Basically an organic fertilizer works as a soil improver on the soil structure rather than on the plant itself. Therefore, calicanthus, which seems to have no particular needs as regards the contribution of specific chemicals, tends to benefit from a stable and well balanced soil. Among the various substances contained in these fertilizers are present phosphorus, iron, copper, potassium, chlorine, zinc, boron and are all linked to carbon,

Calicanto, cultivation techniques: Diseases of calicanthus

Calicanthus is easily affected by aphids. These parasites especially infect the shoots, devastating them almost completely if not acted immediately. It is advisable to try to eradicate aphids in spring, especially to prevent them from spreading throughout the garden. Another problem of calicanthus is the possible rotting of the roots due to excessive watering that leads to the death of the branches. Stopping the wetting process completely helps solve the problem. Sometimes even excessive heat can ruin the branches and cause the leaves to sag. In this case, it is sufficient to remove the damaged areas and water the foliage. This operation must be carried out during the early hours of the morning in order to avoid the development of burns.
