Garden plants

People who choose to equip their home with a private garden in total autonomy certainly know both the advantages and disadvantages of this solution; they are, it must be admitted, very moved towards advantages, and this is also deducible from the fact that more and more people decide to make a garden (whether it is to use the land around or near the house, buy it, or choose a new house precisely taking this parameter). In fact it is a piece of nature exclusively dedicated to us, which is enormously positive because nature is one of those things that has the best effects on the human body in general, or better to say, on the person. Garden plants contribute to this in an absolute way, which are the fundamental juice of the garden itself: they furnish the space in front of the house with grace and naturalness, fill the air with fresh oxygen and the scents of their flowers and fruits, give color and naturalness to the eye, refreshing the spirit and soul. In fact, as garden plants, those plants are adopted that have the best balance between duration, not excessive demand for care and maintenance and aesthetics. Let’s be clear, every plant can be placed in the garden, but the «garden» ones have those balanced characteristics that we have just mentioned. not excessive demand for care and maintenance and aesthetics. Our article is dedicated to one of the most popular garden plants, even if less known neither in name nor in sight, not being a «best seller» in its field: the cornus mas. This name is the scientific name with which this plant of the Cornaceae family is indicated, but for those who know it it will certainly be more famous as «dogwood». This plant, at least referring to Italy, is a typical «Northern» plant, because its ideal climate is shady and humid, quite temperate (but tolerates cold temperatures well) and with a predominantly calcareous subsoil. However, it is present fairly uniformly throughout the territory (as well as widely its European soils up to the Middle East), with a certain prevalence for the hills and the lower parts of the mountains, up to about fifteen hundred meters above sea level (1500 meters above sea level). It is characterized by being a shrubby plant that can reach a maximum of five meters in height, which is often found in small groups and which has a red-brown bark and branches, green leaves, oval and lanceolate, furrowed by evident ribs, small and usually yellow flowers with umbrella shape and gathered in bunches, and fruits similar to elongated cherries, edible if taken as soon as they fall from the plant.

Uses of dogwood

In addition to being a beautiful garden plant (from the characteristics described above it can be understood how it attracts many people for the liveliness of its colors, ranging from the red of the bark to the green of the leaves, passing through the yellow of the small flowers), the dogwood it is widely used in various fields, because many of its parts have interesting applications. Its fruits, which are drupes (such as olives) and that is quite fleshy fruits and oily juice, are widely used to produce jams with a very refined flavor, and in fact they are used not in common cuisine but in the finest one, where accompany many meat dishes. Not only that, a famous distilled liqueur such as grappa is also flavored with the fruit of the cornus mas, especially in the northern regions. Great importance is also given to the wood of the dogwood, which has characteristics of great hardness and resistance which make it valuable and expensive, used for pipes of a certain importance. In general, all parts of the dogwood can be used in dry cleaners due to the possibility of extracting an appreciated yellow from it.

Cornus: Curiosity and price

Cornus mas is appreciated because it is a plant that, when discussing gardening, can provide a lot of satisfaction for its colorful, lively and always easy style (since it is also a shrub plant). Usually a particular accent is placed on the flowers of the dogwood, with the characteristic umbrella opening and gathered in various bunches per branch; but it is above all their splendid yellow that strikes, a very bright and spring color, and in fact it is in the first months of spring that the dogwood gives its best: its flowering begins in March and usually lasts just over sixty – seventy days to finish between April and May. Limited to the aforementioned uses of the cornus fruit (flavoring for grappa and jams), it should be noted that its purchase cost for the producers of these products is not low at all, and this is due to the fact that it is a very not very productive plant, because it is slow to ferment and also has a low alcohol content; this clearly affects the price (and refinement) of the final products. In the past, cornus wood, widespread throughout Europe and therefore within the reach of all civilizations of the past, was also used for spokes and rims of wooden wagon wheels, testifying to the aforementioned robustness.
