The cycas plants: their origin

Cycas plants are often confused with palms while it is another type of plant, of great interest due to its very remote origin, dating back to about one hundred million years ago. Some living specimens have six or seven hundred years of life, but the dating of the appearance of cycad plants on earth was only possible through the examination of existing fossil records. Cycad plants can be grown as houseplants and live in the open ground, outdoors, in regions with a mild climate; they can be successfully grown in pots in order to be able to collect them during the winter. An excellent solution is to arrange the cycas plants in pots and, from April to November, take them to the garden, burying the container, in a shady or semi-shady corner, sheltered from the wind.

The plants of cycas: various species

The most cultivated and less demanding plants of cycas, but with undisputed decorative qualities, are: the plants of cycas circinnalis; the plants of cycas media. Cycas plants: Cycas plants: care

The scientific name of cycas plants derives from a Greek term used by Theophrastus to indicate a certain type of palm. It is interesting to know that in the places of origin these wonderful plants also acquire a certain value in terms of food. The natives of Polynesia and Paupasia use the long leaves of the cycas to make large flabelli, that is fans, to be waved on the sorcerer’s head to ward off evil spirits. Wanting to return to cultivation, we see that this does not present any particular difficulties. The cycas plants that live in the apartment must be carefully watered, to avoid excess humidity and above all water stagnation in the pot holders and saucers. Outdoor cycad plant care does not differ from apartment care.
