Garden plants of the species called Escallonia

The genus of plants called Escallonia, includes about fifty different species and belong to the Escalloniaceae family. These plants are native to South America and are characterized by their very vigorous shrubby habit and by the abundant blooms that are produced starting from June, continuing copiously, until the arrival of the autumn season. The flowers can be goblet or funnel-shaped, according to the different varieties and species, they are red, white and pink. The leaves are small and evergreen, oval in shape and dark green, shiny. Escallonia garden plants are used and cultivated for ornamental purposes, both as single specimens and for the creation of formal hedges with a dense and compact appearance.

Cultivation techniques of Escallonia garden plants

The species of plants of Escallonia are very suitable for being cultivated in coastal territories, with temperate winters; they resist cold winters but fear sub-zero temperatures. To obtain a luxuriant growth, it is advisable to place these plants sheltered from strong currents. The water supply must be regular, especially during the summer while it is reduced to what is strictly necessary in winter. Garden plants that adapt to both fertile and poor or stony soils, the important thing is that the correct drainage of irrigation is ensured. After flowering, a pruning operation thickens the foliage and stimulates the growth of new leaf buds. In autumn and spring, it is advisable to periodically administer liquid organic fertilizer for flowering plants.

Propagation by cuttings of Escallonia plant species

The most widespread and used method to obtain new Escallonia plants is through semi-woody cutting, to be practiced between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The selected apical buds must be at least ten centimeters long and totally free of buds or flowers. Before planting the cuttings, the oblique cut must be treated with rooting and pesticide dust and the excess leaves must be eliminated. After that, they are placed in containers filled with peat and sand, mixed in equal parts. The ideal temperature should not drop below twelve degrees, when the new root system is well developed, the new Escallonia specimens are planted in individual pots. At the arrival of the following spring season, it is possible to plant permanently.

The different species and varieties of Escallonia plants

There are several varieties of Escallonia, obtained through genetic selections, such as the so-called Escallonia rubra Macrantha, with evergreen foliage and rounded shape, it is characterized by abundant blooms during the summer months, of an intense red color. Numerous inflorescences, in different shades of pink for the Escallonia Apple Blossom while the white and pink flowers, distinguish the hybrid variety called Escallonia Donard White, with a compact and round shrub habit. Suitable for growing in pots, they are the garden plants of Escallonia Red Dream, they do not grow much and the branches are abundantly covered with colored inflorescences, of pink or red tones. Green and shiny leaves, white flowers gathered in racemes for the selection called Escallonia Iveyi.
