Lonicera

Lonicera

Native to America and the Far East, Locinera belongs to the genus of Spermatophyte Dicotyledonous plants of the Caprifoliaceae family. About 200 species belong to this genus of plant, including a dozen of the Italian spontaneous flora. The genus is polymorphic and is divided into sections: Caprifolium, Xylosteum and Nontova. Caprifolium contains all those climbing species; Xylosteum includes the bushy species; nontova includes climbing and evergreen species. The name of the plant “Lonicera” derives from the botanist Adam Lonitzer who in Italian is pronounced Adamo Lonicer. The name “caprifolium” instead derives from the Latin and is composed of “goat” and “folium” which correspond to goat and leaf. Another name attributed to this plant is “Madreselva”, while others derive from the Tuscan Renaissance. The Greeks, for example, they called this plant “peryclimenon” which means “encirclement”. In every place and every population gave a different name to this genus based on various meanings and uses.

How it looks

This species can be presented in different ways, some species are woody plants and bushy shrubs, others climbing or lianosis, they are distinguished precisely because they have different characteristics. The stem varies in size, it can reach a height ranging from 20 centimeters to 7 meters. A peculiarity of the stem is that it is characterized by a single layer of “bast” fibers, fibers located inside the bark and used in the production of books. Its leaves can be persistent, semi-persistent or deciduous; they can also be sessile or petiolate and are arranged 2 by 2 along the stem. The dimensions of its leaves, as for the stem, vary from species to species, and range from 1 centimeter to 10 centimeters. Its flowers, very fragrant with benzoloid substances, are hermaphrodites, zygomorphs and tetracyclics. It is enough to break the stems of this plant to smell the smell they emanate. The resulting fruit is a juicy berry with a color between red and purple or black, this is often toxic because it contains xylostein. The inflorescence is axillary or terminal type. As for pollination, the plant is entomogamous (it uses insects and butterflies).

Cultivation

The cultivation of this species is not difficult at all as the plant does not need special attention and care. The Lonicera is a type of plant that should be placed in sunny and half-shade places, they are not afraid of too low winter temperatures or too high summer ones. They are able to withstand temperatures of -24 ° C and 38 ° C, in fact they are plants widely used in flowerbeds located in the city. They adapt to any type of soil, but prefer well-drained and rich soils. They find it difficult to adapt to soils predisposed to retain moisture, this is not appreciated by the Lonicera. As far as irrigation is concerned, they do not require watering, on the contrary, they are satisfied with rainwater and are able to withstand even long periods of drought. They are not affected by diseases and parasites as they are very strong and resistant plants, but sometimes it can happen that some parasites attack them or that rot at the roots forms. In these cases it is enough to take care of the plant in order to eliminate the aphids that could weaken it and be careful not to favor water stagnation as regards the formation of root rot. The multiplication of this plant can take place according to two methods: by seed or by cuttings, depending on the stage at which you already want to have the new specimen and the equipment you have available (because for example, for growth from seed, preparation is required fit of the room). Uses

Lonicera is known in some places for its use in cooking, not everyone knows that some of its flowers produce a very sweet edible substance that can be used in the production of sorbets, syrups or is used for desserts. In Siberia these plants are known for their sugary berries belonging to the L. coerulea species, while in the Himalayas the sugary berries of the L. angustifola species are sought. L. involucrata and L. ciliata are also two edible and sought-after American species. The uses of the Lonicera do not end here, the main use is in gardening. They are plants that for their bearing, their fragrance and their flowers ensure a success for commercial purposes. More than a third of the species found in nature are known and cultivated in European gardens and in the gardens of other places. Climbing species are used to cover pergolas or walls or are used to create galleries in gardens. The shrub species, on the other hand, are used for the formation of hedges or to divide the gardens into different areas. With one species of this plant, L tartaric, toys for cats are built through wood as they contain a substance that is believed to be a substitute for feline sex pheromones. In some areas, certain types of species are considered invasive weeds. The shrub species, on the other hand, are used for the formation of hedges or to divide the gardens into different areas.
