Epilobium (Epilobium parviflorum)

The Epilobium parviflorum is a very nice grass, but also has medicinal properties that are, in other words, you can have such an ally in a pot very good for your health. And all without giving it too much care!

Its growth rate is fast; In fact, in a few months you will enjoy the flowers like the ones you see in the image above. Would you like to know how?

Origin and characteristics of Epilobium parviflorum

It is a perennial herb native to Europe known as epilobio or small-flowered oleander. It develops robust stems, up to 75 centimeters tall, covered by a kind of short, whitish wool. The leaves are oblong to linear-lanceolate, and the upper ones are alternate, all green. It blooms in summer, producing flowers 6-9mm in diameter, pink in color.

It can be easily confused with the Epilobium hirsutum species, but our protagonist has the leaves wedged at the base and somewhat toothed, in addition to the fact that its flowers are smaller.

What are the care it requires?

If you would like to have a very healthy dog, or you just got one and you have no idea how to take care of it, then we will explain how to do it:

The epilobium or Epilobium parviflorum is an herb that must be outdoors, in an area where the sun shines directly. Now, if you live in an area where there is a strong insolation, it can grow well or even better if you have it in semi-shade.

It is not demanding, however we recommend the following:

  • Garden: grows in all types of soils, but if yours is clay and/ or poorly drained when you make the planting hole, mix the garden soil with 20% or so perlite or similar. With this you will prevent the roots from rotting and that, if that were not enough, they can have a better development.
  • Pot: use substrate for urban garden mixed with 30% clay or similar. With this mixture you will provide all the nutrients it needs to be in an optimal state of health.

During all the warm months of the year, that is, from spring to late summer, you will appreciate a weekly or biweekly contribution of organic fertilizers, such as guano or cow dung.

The milkweed multiplies by seeds in spring. To do this, you just have to sow them in, for example, a seedbed tray (on sale here ) with substrate for seedlings (on sale here ) putting a maximum of 2 units in each alveolus, watering them, and placing them outside, in semi-shadow.

If you keep the soil moist but not flooded, you will get them to germinate in 6-10 days, but do not transfer them to an individual pot or to the garden until they have at least 2 pairs of true leaves, although the ideal is to wait for them to measure about 10 centimeters.

Planting or transplanting time

In spring, when the risk of frost has passed. If you have it in a pot, transfer it to a larger one when you see roots grow out of the drainage holes, or when more than a year has passed since the last change.

Plagues and diseases

It is very resistant, but you have to be careful with the mollusks (snails and mollusks) during the rainy season since they feed on the leaves. In this link you will know what remedies to use to keep them away:

The epilobio resists frosts down to -7ºC. If you are in an area where it is colder, protect it in a home greenhouse or outside wrapped with anti-frost mesh.

What uses does it have?

It is a plant that produces very showy flowers, which added to the height it reaches once adulthood makes it a very interesting species to grow in pots and gardens. Growing it alone or with other similar flower species, the effect that can be achieved makes it definitely worth purchasing.

It is the use that is given the most. A small spoonful of the dried plant is taken in infusion in 250ml of water, twice a day. But before starting any treatment it is important to consult a doctor.

Medicinal properties of Epilobium parviflorum

It has anticancer, antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral properties, and helps strengthen the immune system. It also helps fight gastrointestinal problems, such as inflammation of the digestive mucosa, diarrhea, or gastroenteritis.

As if that were not enough, it is used for conditions of the bladder, kidneys and, in the case of men, the prostate.
