Rue

Belonging to the Rutaceae family, the Ruta is a perennial shrub of the graveolens species. This plant reaches 50 to 80 centimeters in height and 20 to 30 centimeters in width. It consists of very branched stems and with an erect posture, they are green in color but tend towards blue. When young, particularly in the first year of life, the stems are herbaceous while, subsequently, they become brown and woody. The roots of Ruta plants develop well in depth and are robust, fibrous, anchoring and white in color. Their evergreen leaves are fleshy and alternate and have the characteristic of possessing deep incisions from which the lobes arise. The lobes have an oval and elongated shape, are green in color tending to blue and, at times, have blue shades. They are rich in glands containing oily substances. The flowers of these plants are small, they gather in inflorescences that are formed at the apex of the stems, are made up of four petals and have a yellow color tinged with green. The blooms of the Ruta plants occur during the summer period. The fruits are capsules which, inside, contain many small black seeds.

Cultivation


Ruta, since ancient times, has been used for many ailments both for the effectiveness of the beneficial effects on our body and for the spread of this plant in our areas. The cultivation of these plants does not require special attention and even less is it a difficult job to take care of them. They are plants that easily adapt to the climate of the place in which they grow and, often, they are also found in the state of natural budding. The Ruta are not afraid of low temperatures and frosts but they need to be positioned in places where there is a lot of lighting. It does not prefer particular soils, it grows well in poor soils (calcareous and stony). As far as irrigation is concerned, rue do not need so much water. The most collected and used parts of these plants are the leaves, they are harvested at the beginning of the spring through a gradual process following the various stages of maturation of the plant. Subsequently, the leaves are placed in a dry environment, sheltered from light and with good air circulation for drying. Once dried they are stored in tightly closed glass containers.

Property

The properties that provide beneficial effects to our body and that are contained within the Ruta plants are essential oils, vitamins (P), coumarins, tannins and flavonoids (rutin). The uses of this plant are various and mainly concern the field of phytotherapy. The consumption of Ruta extracts, thanks to the antispasmodic properties, is useful for the eyes in case you have problems caused or related to stress, excessive effort and a state of depression. An important beneficial action that this plant carries out is to relieve muscle tension or trauma to the tendons and bones, in fact it is known because it is an excellent remedy for all sportsmen or those who suffer from these pains. For these excellent beneficial actions that it carries out, the Ruta, it is a plant widely used in herbal medicine for physical stress, fatigue, pain and trauma. Its consumption is also very useful to reduce post traumatic pain and to facilitate the recovery period. Rue also has cholagogue (relieves colic), sweat, stomachic and digestive properties (stimulates the secretion of gastric juices and increases blood circulation, promoting proper digestion). Furthermore, its properties give greater resistance to capillaries and blood vessels and are able to counteract epilepsy, hysteria and hypertension. This plant is also used externally for the dressing and treatment of sores and wounds. Uses and side effects

As already mentioned above, the Ruta is used a lot in various fields. Previously we have listed the properties it contains within it and the beneficial effects it has on our body. In addition to being used in herbal medicine, its consumption also concerns the kitchen. The main use of this plant in the kitchen is the use to flavor grappas or liqueurs of various kinds. Its bitter taste means it can be used, in very low quantities, also to flavor fish dishes, salads, eggs and cheeses. Despite the beneficial actions carried out by the Ruta plant, it must be consumed with the utmost attention. Rue is full of substances which, taken in excessive quantities, make it toxic. In fact, it is recommended that not to touch some parts of the plant with bare hands because they could cause swelling and redness. The intake of this plant for long periods must take place only and exclusively under the advice and control of a doctor. Among the side effects caused by this plant is the photosensitization caused by the coumarin properties present inside. A tip is not to use this plant during pregnancy, Ruta, contains abortive properties.
