Commonly called Corbezzolo, the Arbutus unedo plant is native to the European continent and belongs to the Ericaceae family. It is characterized by a mainly shrubby habit but can also be grown as a tree. The foliage is shiny, lanceolate in shape, with serrated margins. The flowers produced are small, bell-shaped and grouped in pendulous clusters, white in color. They unfold numerous, during the months of October and November. The fruits take almost a year to ripen, are spherical in shape and do not exceed two centimeters in diameter. The color is red and they are edible. The Corbezzolo evergreen plant typical of the Mediterranean scrub, is used for ornamental purposes to decorate gardens and terraces. Cultivated as a fruit tree, it can reach a height of five meters.

The cultivation of the Corbezzolo plant


Corbezzolo plants easily adapt to the Mediterranean climate and do not require excessive cultivation attention. They grow in rocky and sandy soils. This plant species is also cultivated in soils damaged by fires and in those with acid pH. They tolerate the winter seasons well but fear frosts and temperatures below five degrees. The Strawberry Tree is an evergreen plant, it loves sunny positions and sheltered from strong currents. Irrigation must never be abundant or too frequent, in fact, they are plants that tolerate drought periods and summer heat very well. To support flowering and fruit production it is advisable to administer an organic fertilizer, to be diluted in watering, during the spring and autumn season.

The different varieties of Corbezzolo plants


Typical plant of the Mediterranean scrub, the Corbezzolo, grows spontaneously in the Italian hilly areas and is cultivated for ornamental purposes. Among its different varieties, there is the so-called Greek strawberry tree, that is the Arbutus andrachne. The flowers, gathered in clusters, are white and delicately scented. Shrubby plant that grows slowly and adapts to all types of soil, except calcareous ones. The hybrid born from the spontaneous crossing of Arbutus unedo and Arbutus andrachne is called Arbutus × andrachnoides, does not reach large dimensions and with the passage of time, the branches take on meandering and supple shapes. Finally the Arbutus unedo f. rubra, is characterized by the production of abundant pink inflorescences which all open at the same time.
