The irrigation of the Strelitzia

Strelitzia is a herbaceous plant from Southern Africa and is part of the large taxonomic grouping of the Strelitziaceae. This beautiful and colorful perennial plant, often also placed in containers inside buildings, has a considerable need to be wet, with some differences depending on the position and the current climatic season. As a rule, it should be regularly and frequently irrigated for almost the entire duration of the year, even on a weekly basis, except in the heart of the summer period, in which watering will be limited or even suspended. In any case, it is advisable to water only if the soil is dry or dry, in order to avoid dangerous stagnation of water that can damage or weaken the root system.

Plant care and cultivation

The strelitziait is a resistant and adaptable plant that must be placed either outside in a park or indoors, but in both cases it needs a soil full of organic matter and equipped with sandy elements or other similar materials, able to ensure correct drainage and keeping the earth dry. If stored in containers, in the first years it must be constantly repotted, in principle in the spring period, until it reaches a fair size. and dry or damaged leaves, by hand or with a suitable tool, in order to allow the plant to conserve energy and keep itself in perfect health.

As far as fertilization is concerned, simple rules must be followed: Normally, the plant must be fertilized from the end of the summer period until late spring, every 20-25 days approximately, while the operation must be interrupted in the remaining part of the year. , except for specific and justified needs. For this purpose, fertilizers of a solid nature, so-called slow-release, or even liquid, suitably diluted in the water for watering can be used. It is absolutely advisable to use specific fertilizers for the type of plant, with a significant presence of elements. potassium and nitrogen, in addition to the various and necessary microelements. Organic fertilizers are widely used, appreciated for their excellent ability to keep the substrate vital.

Exposure and possible plant diseases

Strelitzia loves heat and high temperatures and should be placed in an illuminated and not very shady place, even exposed to the sun’s rays, for most of the months of the year. Although it is very strong and resistant, however, it is advisable to shelter it in the sultry summer days, in order to avoid damage to the roots. In the winter months it should be placed in sheltered environments and with a temperature never lower than 8 – 9 ° C, making sure that there is adequate recirculation of air and at the same time removing significant and abrupt flows of air. Finally, the perennial plant can be subjected to attacks, as well as molds, also by insects and parasites, such as the spider mite and the cochineal. In this case, it will be necessary to eliminate them manually, if possible, or with the use of specific insecticide.
