Pineapple

Native to South America and later brought to Europe, Pineapple is a plant of the Bromeliaceae family. This plant has a height that varies from 50 to 100 centimeters, and its fruit can reach a weight of 5 kg. The pineapple is made up of long leaves with a serrated edge, and they have a color that varies from gray to green. The flowers, on the other hand, are red and have thorny leaves. At the center of this plant, more or less every 18 months, the fruit grows. The fruit has some characteristics such as: the yellow pulp and the brown rind formed by plates joined together. Pineapple, intended as a fruit, contains few calories; but it contains a substance, Bromelain, which accelerates the mechanisms of metabolism. From the leaves of this plant, a very useful fiber is obtained for the production of fabrics and ropes. Another thing to add is that the extract of this plant promotes digestion, very useful for those suffering from digestive problems, and helps those suffering from cellulite.

Cultivation

Pineapple is grown in areas with a tropical climate or in warm greenhouses. In the case of greenhouses, where a temperature of 23 ° C is maintained, the plant blooms every two years. There are various types of qualities, but the most cultivated are: the Queen Victoria, the smooth Cayenne and the Red Spanish. The Queen Victoria has a weight of about 1 kg and is very fragrant, its fruit has yellow and firm pulp. The smooth Cayenne, of very high quality, is large and its pulp is sweet and juicy. The slightly fibrous Red Spanish is of medium size and is characterized by a pale but aromatic pulp, orange rind and a slightly acidic flavor. Pineapple is a demanding plant as regards watering, regular and constant watering is recommended during the spring and summer period. In the autumn and winter period, irrigations can be reduced. Care must be taken not to favor stagnation in the period of greatest watering and not to let the plant dry out in the coldest period. This plant should not be pruned, the only precaution is to remove the dry leaves so as not to dry out and make the plant sick. It needs to be fertilized regularly from early spring to early autumn with liquid substances to be diluted in water. It is important to know that the plant does not need fertilizers that contain only Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus, but also elements such as Iron, Boron, Zinc, Copper, Manganese and Molybdenum. the only precaution is to remove the dry leaves so as not to dry out and sick the plant. Phytotherapy

Many plants have properties that go beyond the normal healthy definition that is associated with natural products such as fruit and vegetables; in fact, in this regard, real sciences have been born over the centuries, designed to study the best ways to select, preserve and use plants with particular properties: these are herbal medicine and phytotherapy. With the second which is relatively more recent than the first and deals specifically with the improvement of body functions through natural products that herbal medicine classifies and helps to study. In the last ten years, following a trend (fortunately a positive …) American and Hollywood with a natural and healthy character, herbal medicine and phytotherapy are spreading over the world.

Pineapple in herbal medicine

We began this short treatise by talking about pineapple, a plant of tropical origin but whose fruit is very common in culinary habits and is served both after lunch and together with some refined but always very natural appetizers. In this case, however, we want to focus on the phytotherapeutic qualities of pineapple, which are relevant: this plant contains an enzyme called Bromelain which greatly helps weight loss, as it acts with proteolytic action and therefore “destroys” most of the proteins we eat. in order to make it more difficult to absorb. Unfortunately, this precious substance is found mainly in the pineapple stem, usually not sold and in any case very inedible; of course, obviously in small quantities it is also contained in the fruit but to really help your body stay in shape, herbal companies have developed pineapple-based supplements that have a high percentage of Bromelain and therefore do very well from this point of view. Specifically, they are presented either in powder or as tablets: in the first case it is useful to follow the instructions on the package on the quantities of water in which to dissolve them, while for the tablets the advice of the herbalist where you buy the product could help.
