The do-it-yourself pergola: its function and the materials used

The do-it-yourself pergola must be designed and built in such a way as to fulfill its function at its best (create a shaded area for our most varied needs) and be as comfortable as possible. Therefore, the choice of the material with which to build the DIY pergola is fundamental in this sense. The classic pergola is generally made of wood, made in the style and shape that you prefer. However, iron, steel and aluminum are often used: in this way, the do-it-yourself pergola is more robust, but sometimes the use of these materials is not recommended for reasons of harmony with the environment. Sometimes, the DIY pergola has a mixed structure, which combines two different materials, for example wood and iron or wood and bricks. L’

The most used material to make pergolas: wood

In DIY pergolas the most used material is wood, especially for its adaptability and versatility. In fact, precisely for this reason, the DIY wooden pergolas can have a structure that is coarser or finer according to our preferences and, consequently, to the processing of the material. Furthermore, on the market there are an almost infinite number of paints, different in color and in the visual effects they allow to obtain. On the other hand, wood is one of the materials most subject to the action of atmospheric agents and wear. Consequently, it will need more maintenance in order to last over time and to be treated with impregnating agents, anti-mold and so on. Among the types of wood most used for the construction of a do-it-yourself wooden pergola we find larch, chestnut,

DIY wooden pergolas: the first steps to take

Let’s see now how to make a DIY wooden pergola. Lamellar wood, in particular, represents a good compromise between the strength requirements of the pergola and the rustic effect that you want to obtain. In fact, it is made up of wooden slats glued one on top of the other: in this way the pergola will be much more resistant and much easier to model (and therefore customizable). Surely it is much easier and faster (saving time, work and money) to build the DIY pergola starting from an existing patio, instead of starting from scratch. However, such a structure is not always available, so you have to decide on the size that the pergola will have. First, you will have to measure the ceiling height in order to identify where and how to position the poles that will support the pergola as load-bearing columns. In addition, a certain distance must be maintained between the columns and the entrance, so that the weight of the structure is well distributed and that the columns are perfectly aligned.

Moving on to the actual construction, holes about 70 centimeters deep and 30 centimeters wide must be excavated. The columns will be inserted into them (whose diameter must be at least 25 centimeters): the remaining empty space must be filled with concrete. Once the foundations of the structure are in place, wooden beams will be placed on the ends of the columns to support the roof. It is recommended to fix them with steel nails at least 7 cm long. Once the horizontal joists have been fixed, it is the turn of the perpendicular ones, which must be fixed to the wall of the house used as a support on one side, and to the horizontal beams on the other. Nail everything with the same type of screws used previously. Finally, make the roof, which can be, as desired, in tiles, wooden planks or glass plates. It is advisable to insulate it first, so that the pergola is habitable even during the rain. Just place a layer of plexiglass plates under the tiles.
