Asimina triloba

The irrigation of the northern banana tree

Asimina triloba needs constant irrigation during spring and summer, especially during particularly dry periods; in autumn and winter, on the other hand, watering can be reduced or suspended, depending on the rainfall trend. Another factor that influences the administration of water resources is the age of the plant: young specimens have a greater need for water than adult ones, as they are still weak and must be monitored carefully. With sprinkler irrigation it is possible to directly wet the roots avoiding the foliage, and obtaining a great saving. It is recommended not to run into water stagnation, which can enormously damage the tree, causing root rot and other fungal diseases.

Cultivation of the asimin triloba

This tree needs a soil with an acidic or neutral pH, rich in humus and well drained, so as to avoid water stagnation. The multiplication occurs by sowing or by cuttings, even if in the first case the process will be decidedly slower. A preliminary plant must be carried out in a medium-sized container, filled with soil, peat and sand; after the first two years, the plant can be transplanted into the garden. Pruning must be performed at the end of winter, using tools that are sharp and clean, in order to avoid possible infections: the branches that obstruct the general supply of light to the tree and those damaged by the cold or by any fungi must be cut . It is essential to carry out a periodic mulching of the soil.

Fertilizing the tree

A first fertilization of Asimina triloba must be completed at the moment of implantation, with an organic product such as mature manure; then it is necessary to proceed annually with a ternary fertilizer that balances potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen. If the soil is rich in these elements, it is possible to simply use, once again, a natural fertilizer. In any case, the three macroelements mentioned must never be lacking in the plant, since the role they play is essential for proper development: potassium, in fact, supports the absorption of water and sugars, phosphorus helps the processes of metabolism, nitrogen intervenes in the growth of the vegetative parts. If possible, the fertilizer should also include trace elements such as magnesium and molybdenum.

Asimina triloba: Exposure, diseases and remedies

The recommended exposure for this tree must take place in a sunny environment; the northern bananait does not fear low temperatures, but it is necessary that the plant does not occur in shady positions, in order not to incur a too slow development. It is also recommended to avoid coastal areas. This plant, moreover, has a remarkable resistance to parasites, even to the most common ones such as aphids, red spider mites and scale insects. In case of excessive humidity, however, fungal diseases such as rot and molds can occur, which determine a global condition of progressive weakening; to prevent this problem it is generally sufficient not to carry out excessive irrigation, while treatments based on specific fungicidal products are suggested as a remedy.
