These plants find their natural habitat in warm areas but still have great adaptability even to less mild climates. On sale there are usually plants that are a couple of years old: when they are bought it is very important to protect the roots, which are the most delicate part. The plant is planted in spring, in holes in the ground about 50 centimeters deep, while the collar must protrude 3 or 4 cm from the ground level. Although the cacomela is a resistant plant, its ideal exposure is still in full sun, a position that allows it to grow rapidly and to bear fruit. It is not a plant that requires special care, except in the very first years of life, when the roots have not yet reached a sufficient resistance to cold. In this case the solution is to cover the above ground with bark. Excessive cold or too abundant watering can cause root rot and attack by fungi and parasites such as pseudococcus viburni, the kaki cotonello. In dry periods, on the other hand, the danger is represented by the fruit fly, whose bites cause damage to the fruit tissues, which rot, giving rise to dark spots.
