Irrigation

The beautiful perennial plant comes exclusively from the American continent, central and southern, and is part of the varied and multicolored family grouping of the Cannaceae. This exotic herb is distinguished by its glossy foliage and its colorful inflorescence and is often used to delightfully dye any type of corner or border of the garden. Not particularly demanding in terms of wetting, it will in any case be generously sprayed during the spring and summer seasons, on average weekly, while watering will be adequately limited in the rigid periods, or completely interrupted in the presence of rainy weather conditions. It is highly advisable to wet the Canna indica only when the earth is dry or even dry.

Cultivation

The Canna indica will normally find a happy and adequate accommodation in the verdant landscape, and it can also be housed in special containers of moderate size. Whatever the chosen positioning, it will be preferable to adopt a soft, not very compact soil with sufficient organic substances. Then, sandy and clayey elements must be added in order to allow correct and effective drainage. Moreover, the herbaceous plant must not be subjected to periodic pruning operations, as the simple removal of the tattered foliage and the withered inflorescences is sufficient and satisfactory. The repotting works, on the other hand, can be carried out at least every two years, with the adoption of increasingly sized containers able to accommodate the roots.

Fertilization

The decorative plant will obviously need to be fertilized, in order to obtain the right and essential nutrients. Fertilization should preferably be carried out during the vegetative season, from the first warmth of spring until the end of September, with due suspension in the other periods of the year, except for specific needs. Liquid fertilizer dissolved in the spraying water should normally be used, at least twice a week, but alternatively it will also be possible to use solid fertilizers, distinguished by the progressive release over time. The chosen fertilizer will be suitable for the type of plant and will contain a fair amount of potassium and phosphoric elements, useful for healthy and correct development and for the desired luxuriance of the inflorescence.

Canna indicates: Exposure and pathologies

The harmonious perennial plant will preferably be placed in a warm and sunny habitat, with direct exposure to the sun’s rays for a few hours of the day, however it will be able to find discreet positioning even in partially shady spaces. In any case, it will be necessary to ensure somewhat mild and temperate climatic conditions, since the herbaceously suffers greatly from the rigors of the cold. Should the temperatures drop below 3-5 ° C, it will be conveniently protected by means of suitable fabrics and materials. Finally, the robust and resistant exotic plant will be very unlikely to be subjected to attacks by insects and parasites, but nevertheless it can be dangerously affected by molds and rot at the roots, due to inefficient soil drainage.
